Governor Quinn Announces $151,000 for Multi-Use Trail Improvements in Winnebago County

Press Release - Thursday, May 22, 2014

ROCKFORD - Governor Pat Quinn today announced an investment of $151,000 in federal funds to develop a special parking area for vehicles and snowmobilers along the Pecatonica Trail in Winnebago County. The funds from the federal Recreational Trails Program are designed to increase the use of recreational trails. Today's announcement is part of Governor Quinn's commitment to promoting outdoor activity as a way to stay healthy and enjoy what Illinois has to offer.

"Northern Illinois has some beautiful recreational trails, and these federal funds will help more people enjoy them during all seasons," Governor Quinn said.

The Illinois Department of Natural Resources (IDNR) administers the Recreational Trails Program grants in Illinois.

"Improving our infrastructure for recreation on public lands is an important step as we work to connect more people with nature and the outdoors," IDNR Director Marc Miller said. "These grants will help communities and government agencies do a better job of making public spaces available to all."

Winnebago County will use the $151,000 federal grant to develop a 42 stall trailhead parking area, including 20 spaces to accommodate vehicles with snowmobile trailers. The lot will be constructed adjacent to the multi-use Pecatonica Trail near the intersection of U.S. Route 20 and Hoisington Road. The total project cost is estimated to be $189,500.

"Our parks provide so many resources for local communities - recreational, educational and financial," State Senator Tim Bivins (R-Dixon) said. "It is important to maintain these natural areas to attract visitors to the beauty of northwest Illinois."
