Governor Quinn Announces $200,000 for Multi-Use Trail Improvements in Gallatin and Pope Counties

Press Release - Thursday, May 22, 2014

OLD SHAWNEETOWN - Governor Pat Quinn today announced an investment of $200,000 in federal funds to improve portions of the American Discovery Trail in Gallatin and Pope Counties. The funds from the federal Recreational Trails Program are designed to increase the use of recreational trails. Today's announcement is part of Governor Quinn's commitment to promoting outdoor activity as a way to stay healthy and enjoy what Illinois has to offer.

"Southern Illinois has some beautiful natural areas, and these federal funds will help more people enjoy them on foot or on horseback," Governor Quinn said.

The Illinois Department of Natural Resources (IDNR) administers the Recreational Trails Program grants in Illinois.

"Improving our infrastructure for recreation on public lands is an important step as we work to connect more people with nature and the outdoors," IDNR Director Marc Miller said. "These grants will help communities and government agencies do a better job of making public spaces available to all."

The U.S. Forest Service will use the $200,000 federal grant to re-route and improve 5.4 miles of equestrian and hiking trails in the Shawnee National Forest. They will also develop two equestrian trail heads to accommodate parking for five truck and horse trailers. The total project cost is estimated to be $250,000.

"Our state parks are some of the most valuable natural resources in Southern Illinois, so it's important that we continue to make investments to help ensure the recreational trails at Shawnee National Forest can be enjoyed for years to come," State Representative Brandon Phelps (D-Harrisburg) said. "Upgrading the park will help attract more visitors and will help to further stimulate our region's economy."
