Illinois FIRST to Help Plug Abandoned Oil and Gas Wells
SPRINGFIELD -- Governor George H. Ryan today announced that Illinois FIRST is helping hundreds of landowners cap abandoned oil and gas wells in southern and central Illinois that often pose environmental and public safety hazards if left unplugged. More than $998,000 in grants will be used to plug 269 abandoned oil and gas wells in 19 counties in downstate Illinois.
"This program takes the first step toward easing the environmental and safety threat posed by abandoned oil and gas wells by ensuring the wells are plugged properly," Ryan said. "Through Illinois FIRST, we're able to protect groundwater supplies and farm land at risk due to orphaned wells."
Illinois FIRST is providing nearly $892,000 to plug 238 wells, while the state's oil well plugging and restoration fund is providing more than $106,500 to plug another 31 wells.
There are more than 4,700 abandoned wells in the state. The grants, administered by the Illinois Department of Natural Resources, reimburse landowners after the wells are plugged and the work is approved by IDNR inspectors.
This is the fourth year of the landowner grant program, which has provided more than $2.4 million in grants to plug 684 wells. Well eligibility information and additional details about the program are available by contacting the IDNR Office of Mines and Minerals Landowner Grant Program, 524 South Second St., Springfield, IL 627011787, or phone 217/7827756, Ameritech Relay 800/5260844.
