Governor Ryan Releases Funds For Rehabilitating Rail Passenger Stations In Galesburg and Effingham

Press Release - Friday, September 17, 1999

SPRINGFIELD - Governor George H. Ryan today announced the release of $200,000 in state funds for rehabilitating rail passenger train stations in Galesburg and Effingham.

"These station improvement projects are just one example of the partnership the state, communities and Amtrak have forged," Ryan said. "Well-maintained, safe train stations are important in order to keep passengers coming back and attract new riders."

Ryan allocated $100,000 in general revenue funds for the reconstruction of station platforms in Galesburg. Platforms will be upgraded to improve rail passenger and freight train traffic flow through the station. Other improvements include the addition of a passenger shelter canopy and better lighting.

Amtrak and the Burlington Northern Santa Fe railroad will contribute $169,000 toward the total cost of $269,000 for this project.

The remaining $100,000 in general revenue funds is for improvements to building structures at the station in Effingham. The city of Effingham is contributing $5,000 toward the total cost of $105,000 for the renovation.

The station and two buildings purchased by the city will be renovated to provide an improved waiting room and space for retail stores and community activities.
