Ryan Announces $546,000 In Illinois FIRST Funds For Railroad Overpass In Hodgkins

Press Release - Thursday, July 20, 2000

SPRINGFIELD -- Governor George H. Ryan today announced his approval of $546,000 in Illinois FIRST funds to help pay for a new structure to carry Leon Cook Drive over the Burlington Northern Santa Fe Railroad (BNSF) tracks in Hodgkins.

The railroad overpass is part of the village of Hodgkins' effort to revitalize its industrial park by supporting the expansion of Industrial Steel Construction, Inc., Silbrico Corporation and four other corporations.

"The railroad overpass is key to the expansion of the companies and the revitalization of the industrial park. It will insure the retention of 250 jobs and ultimately create 100 new jobs," Ryan said.

"Through Illinois FIRST, the state is able to invest in our communities and promote economic development."

The $546,000 Illinois FIRST grant comes from the Illinois Department of Transportation's Economic Development Program which specifically targets transportation improvements to help communities retain or attract businesses and associated jobs.

Other state funding for the $3 million overpass includes up to $1.8 million from the Grade Crossing Protection Fund administered by the Illinois Commerce Commission. BNSF will contribute $265,918 and the village of Hodgkins will pay for the remaining cost.
