Governor Ryan Tours Historic Old Havana

Press Release - Sunday, October 24, 1999

HAVANA, CUBA -- Governor George H. and First Lady Lura Lynn Ryan today toured Historic Old Havana on their first full day of the Humanitarian Mission to Cuba.

"I was struck by the beauty and history of many of the old buildings and was touched by the kindness and hospitality shown by the Cuban people," Ryan said. "Yet I could not ignore the many obvious needs that unfortunately have made life here difficult for many."

This was part of a 5-day humanitarian mission designed to help fill the many needs faced day-in and day-out by the Cuban people.

Additionally, Governor and Mrs. Ryan attended Roman Catholic and Protestant church services and met with religious leaders about the changes that have occurred throughout Cuba in the past few years.

"I would like to commend the people of Cuba for keeping their faith alive," Ryan said. "I hope that someday we will be able too follow in the words of the Pope by building bridges between the people of Illinois and the people of Cuba."

A complete itinerary of today's activities is attached.
