Illinois residents urged to use state's warming centers, take precautions during dangerously low temperatures

Press Release - Monday, January 27, 2014

SPRINGFIELD, Illinois – Governor Pat Quinn is urging residents to take advantage of the state’s warming centers as temperatures across the state dip to dangerous lows once again. More than 100 warming centers across Illinois are open to provide respite from the bitter cold.

The warming centers are located at Illinois Department of Human Services (IDHS) offices throughout the state. IDHS warming centers are open to the public during regular business hours, Monday through Friday from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m.

In addition to the IDHS warming centers, the Illinois Tollway Oases in the Chicago area are available 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

The Governor also urged all residents to stay inside as much as possible and limit their exposure to the cold temperatures.  If you must go outdoors during below freezing temperatures and the wind-chill is below zero, dress properly for the weather:

• Wear several layers of lightweight clothing.  The air between the layers of clothing acts as insulation to keep you warmer.

• Cover your head. You lose as much as 50 percent of your body heat through your head.

• Wear mittens rather than fingered gloves. The contact of your fingers keeps your hands warmer.

• Wear warm leg coverings and heavy socks or two pairs of lightweight socks.

• Cover your ears and the lower part of your face.  The ears, nose, chin and forehead are most susceptible to frostbite.  Cover your mouth with a scarf to protect the lungs from directly inhaling extremely cold air.

To find a warming center near you, call the IDHS hotline at (800) 843-6154 or visit www.keepwarm.illinois.gov.
