Governor Quinn Statement on U.S. Supreme Court Action

CHICAGO - Governor Pat Quinn today issued the following statement on the United States Supreme Court decision to reject appeals that sought to ban same-sex marriage in Virginia, Oklahoma, Utah, Wisconsin and Indiana:

"I applaud today's U.S. Supreme Court decision to reject the appeals from several states that would have prevented loving couples from joining together in marriage.

"When I signed the Illinois Religious Freedom and Marriage Fairness Act nearly a year ago, we set an example for states across the country and we knew we were on the right side of history.

"Each state that lifts the unconstitutional ban against marriage equality and allows couples to marry freely and equally is another victory for our entire country."
