Governor Announces 2001 Community Development Assistance Program Housing Rehabilitation Grants

Press Release - Wednesday, October 31, 2001

SPRINGFIELD -- Governor George H. Ryan today announced that 24 communities will share $7,500,000 in 2001 Community Development Assistance Program (CDAP) Housing Rehabilitation grant awards.

"As a result of this U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development program, local municipalities throughout Illinois will be able to rehabilitate more than 350 owner-occupied single family homes," Governor Ryan said. "That means 350 families will have a safe, comfortable environment for their families."

The CDAP grants are available to local governments throughout the state for rehabilitation of substandard housing units occupied by low to moderate-income families. Grant funds will be used to correct building code violations of substandard housing. Typical rehabilitation work will include repairs to the mechanical and structural elements of the homes (foundation, heating, plumbing and electrical systems, etc.) as well as roofs, windows, doors and handicap accessibility needs.

The Illinois Department of Commerce and Community Affairs (DCCA) administers the CDAP program which is funded through the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD). A total of 45 applications were received from across the state requesting more than $13.5 million in grants. A competitive application review was conducted and funding amounts were determined based on applications with the highest ratings.

"These grants focus specifically on basic quality of life issue for Illinois families," said DCCA Director Pam McDonough. "The work that will be done to these homes will also go a long way in strengthening the neighborhoods where these houses are located and returning pride to those communities."
