SPRINGFIELD -- Gov. George Ryan today announced almost $5 million in grants for the purchase of lift and ramp vehicles for transporting disadvantaged, elderly, and disabled citizens throughout Illinois.

The grants to 78 locales are another outgrowth of Illinois FIRST, the Governor's $12-billion program for statewide infrastructure improvement.

"Illinois long has been at the forefront of making transportation more accessible for people in need," Gov. Ryan said. "This funding will permit facilities throughout the state to continue to provide this crucial service to those who depend upon it the most."

Almost $1.3 million of the funding comes directly from the state, the Governor said, with the remainder resulting from federal matching grants.
