Governor Ryan Proclaims December As "Employment Services Month"

SPRINGFIELD -- Governor George H. Ryan today proclaimed December as "Employment Service Month" and will observe the 100th Anniversary of the Illinois Employment Service during the week of December 6-10.

"It is very important for us to acknowledge the Employment Service's contributions to the state throughout the last century," Ryan said. "In the last 10 years, nearly one million Illinois men and women have found work through the employment service."

Illinois became the fifth state in the Union to establish by law a State Employment Service, originally known as the "Free Public Employment Service." From its earliest days of assisting veterans returning from the Spanish-American War, through the Great Depression, World War II and right up to the present, the Employment Service has been an available resource to hundreds of thousands of unemployed workers in the state each year, as well as to businesses seeking available workers.

The Illinois Department of Employment Security is adapting its employment service to the changing needs of a global marketplace by developing a 24 hours a day, seven days a week Internet system to be available to match employers needing workers with individuals looking for jobs on the basis of skills.
