Governor Announces Community Water And Sewer Grants

SPRINGFIELD -- Governor George H. Ryan today announced $23.5 million in federally funded grants to 95 villages, cities, townships and counties for water and sewer projects, which will address threats to public health and safety.

"These funds assist Illinois communities in meeting their greatest development needs," said Governor Ryan. "Government has a duty to improve the quality of life for its residents, and these grants will do just that."

The Illinois Department of Commerce and Community Affairs (DCCA) will make the grants available through the Community Development Assistance Program (CDAP). CDAP is federally funded through the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development with Community Development Block Grant Funds.

Crawford County will receive a $400,000 CDAP Public Facilities Construction grant on behalf of Trimble Water District outside of Robinson. With the grant funding, the water district will borrow an additional $223,000 to construct a 50,000-gallon water tower and make related improvements to help relieve extremely low water pressure.

"Communities are often restricted in their ability to develop both residentially and commercially due to water and sewer issues," said DCCA Director Pam McDonough. "These grants make it possible to not only address important quality of life issues for residents, but also provide necessary infrastructure that could lead to future business development."
