Governor Ryan Urges Communities to Participate in President's Citizen Corps Initiative

Press Release - Thursday, April 18, 2002

SPRINGFIELD -- Governor George H. Ryan today urged communities around the state to form Citizen Corps Councils in support of President Bush's Citizen Corps initiative. Four Illinois communities are among approximately 40 nationwide that are already forming Citizen Corps Councils. The four Illinois communities are: Arlington Heights; Belvidere; Moline and Palatine.

"Illinois citizens have a long history of volunteering and serving others in need, whether it's a flood, tornado or any other type of disaster," Governor Ryan said. "Now we must extend our volunteer efforts to help prepare for and prevent threats of terrorism. The events of September 11th have shown us how the actions of everyday citizens coming together can have a great impact on emergency efforts. I want to commend these four communities for stepping forward and I encourage others to learn how they can help in their own communities."

The Citizen Corps Councils will help to steer local volunteer efforts by coordinating Citizen Corps programs, developing community action plans, assessing possible threats and identifying local resources.

Citizen Corps is part of the President's USA Freedom Corps initiative launched earlier this year. Communities interested in learning more about forming their own Citizen Corps Council may do so by visiting the web site at www.citizencorps.gov.
