State Fair Parade to Honor Illinois Veterans

Press Release - Friday, July 19, 2002

SPRINGFIELD, IL -- Governor George H. Ryan today announced that the Illinois State Fair Twilight Parade will salute Illinois veterans, naming them honorary parade marshals.

"Last November many people said that the parade to recognize our military men and women should be the largest in Springfield. I couldn't agree more," Ryan said. "This year the largest parade in Springfield will pay tribute to those who have put their lives on the line to protect our freedoms."

Ryan offered an invitation to veterans groups who want to participate in the parade. Interested groups will lead the annual parade from the corner of Ninth Street and North Grand Avenue into the fairgrounds through the main gate. Transportation will be provided for those unable to walk the parade route.

Groups of Illinois veterans wanting to participate must contact the Illinois State Fair Press Office at 217-524-9825 by July 30. Each participating veteran will receive a commemorative Illinois State Fair 150th Anniversary pin.

The Illinois State Fair Twilight Parade will begin at 5:45 p.m. on Thursday, Aug. 8. and will be broadcast live on Fox 55 in Springfield. There will be free admission to the fairgrounds that evening.
