SPRINGFIELD, Ill. – Gov. Rod R. Blagojevich today announced that he has commissioned special memorials to honor the 25 Illinois service members who have lost their lives during the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq that will be displayed in the state Capitol rotunda and James R. Thompson Center in Chicago.
“This is a way that the people of Illinois can honor those service members from our state who paid the ultimate price in the global war against terrorism,” Blagojevich said. “We are in their debt for their bravery and the freedom we enjoy as a nation.”
The two memorials will feature a bronze plaque and a display that includes a picture of each of the fallen service members, their hometown, branch of service and date of death. If there are additional Illinois deaths, information will be added to the memorials. A ceremony to unveil the memorials will be held when they are complete.
