Governor announces $75,000 to Shimer College

Press Release - Friday, February 06, 2004

CHICAGO - Governor Rod R. Blagojevich today awarded a $75,000 grant for renovations to the Shimer College Community Center in Waukegan.  The community center houses the college's Learning Center, which is an after-school tutoring service for disadvantaged elementary school students.

"I'm pleased we are able to release these funds in order to improve the physical conditions of this facility, which will improve the environment for the youth participating in the center's programs, especially those with disabilities," said Governor Blagojevich.

The renovations to the community center, which was a former YMCA gymnasium, will provide additional space while meeting accessibility standards of the Americans with Disabilities Act.  Meeting these ADA requirements will allow children with disabilities to participate in the center's programs.

"I want to thank the Governor for providing us with funds for this important project that will help many children in my district," said State Senator Terry Link who sponsored the project.
