Statement from Gov. Blagojevich

Press Release - Saturday, April 24, 2004

CHICAGO - "Late last evening, a devastating explosion occurred at the Formosa Plastics plant in the central Illinois town of Illiopolis."

"I want to express my deepest sympathy to the families who lost loved ones in this tragic event. You are in my prayers. I also want to commend the Sangamon County Sheriff's department and the courageous first responders from all of the communities that responded to the scene of the explosion."

"For the second time this week in the wake of tragedy, we have witnessed the state and local communities swing into action and quickly pool resources to provide aid and assistance. Shortly after the explosion, the Illinois Emergency Management Agency, the Illinois Environmental Protection Agency, the Illinois State Police and the Department of Transportation were on the scene working with the local responders, while neighboring communities like Springfield shared equipment and personnel."

"I also want to offer my heartfelt thanks to others involved in the response efforts last night and early this morning including the American Red Cross and the Salvation Army for providing food, coffee and relief for emergency workers."

"While this is an extremely difficult time for many, it's reassuring to see communities and people ban together to help others in their time of need. This week Illinois twice faced devastation and loss - one tragic event on the heels of the other. But I have been encouraged by the acts of heroism, love and humanity as communities begin the process of rebuilding and healing."
