Blagojevich announces $5,900 in funding for the Chinese American Service League
New Community Service Center in Chicago’s Chinatown

CHICAGO - Governor Rod R. Blagojevich today announced $5,900 in funding to the Chinese American Service League for a new Community Service Center in Chicago’s Chinatown community.  This is the final installment on a $50,000 grant for the project.

“For over a quarter century the Chinese American Service League has been providing social services to the Chinese-American community in Chicago, and its immigrant population,” said Governor Blagojevich.  “The bilingual and bicultural programs offered by organizations like this are crucial in helping members of the community ease into their cultural transition and attain self-sufficiency.”

The Chinese American Service League (CASL) was founded in 1978 and is the largest and most comprehensive social service agency in the Midwest dedicated to serving the needs of Chinese Americans with nearly 200 staff members.  The CASL currently serves over 14,000 clients annually through five facilities spread across Chinatown. The new three-story center will unite all of the agency’s programs under one roof providing greater size and flexibility for expanded programs and services.

“Chinatown has been at the center of tremendous growth on Chicago’s south and southwest sides and this community center is going to help solidify the Chinatown Square Development,” said State Senator Mattie Hunter.  She continued by saying, “I would like to thank the Governor for his interest in the Chinese-American community.”
