GOVERNOR ANNOUNCES $500,000 IN GRANTS FOR CRITICAL PROJECT PLANNING
SPRINGFIELD -- Governor George H. Ryan today announced that 22 communities across the state will share $500,000 for the planning of critical sewer and water projects.
"Communities across this state have pressing infrastructure needs that are vital to the health and safety of their residents," Ryan said. "These grants are going to villages and towns that can no longer wait to start planning critical sewer and water projects."
One of the projects will examine ways to bring suitable drinking water to four communities in Northern Illinois, while another will study alternatives for providing a village in Southern Illinois with a public sewer system.
The Village of Dana is receiving $23,500 to develop a strategy to obtain a drinkable water supply for the communities of Dana, Long Point, Ancona and Reading, which are located south of Streator. None of the communities currently has a public water supply, and residents must rely on wells and water hauled by truck. All of these villages share the problems of water quantity and quality.
The Village of Springerton in White County will receive $23,000 to investigate sewage treatment alternatives. Currently, each household in Springerton is served by individual, private septic systems. Due to local conditions, many of the septic systems malfunction, resulting in sewage discharging into ditches and yards.
The Community Development Assistance Program (CDAP) Planning Assistance grants are awarded on a competitive basis by the Illinois Department of Commerce and Community Affairs. A total of 38 communities requested more than $912,000 in assistance during the most recent application process. The grants are available through fiscal year 1999 budget allocations.
"Many of our smaller communities simply can't afford major infrastructure projects on their own. At DCCA, we're committed to helping local officials address the basic needs of their community and improve the quality of life," DCCA Director Pam McDonough said.
