Governor Blagojevich announces tentative contract agreement reached with AFSCME

Press Release - Thursday, June 10, 2004

SPRINGFIELD - After months of negotiations, Governor Rod R. Blagojevich announced today the state and AFSCME Council 31 have reached a tentative agreement on a four-year contract. Over the next several weeks, AFSCME's 85 local unions will vote to ratify the agreement, before the new fiscal year begins on July 1.

"We're pleased that together, we arrived at a contract agreement that is both fair to state workers and responsible, given the state's financial difficulties," said Governor Blagojevich.  "We believe the agreement represents progress for union members and the state and I would like to thank the men and women involved in the negotiations for their hard work.  We look forward to the contract's ratification."

Details of the tentative agreement will not be available until it is ratified by union members.  AFSCME Council 31, the state's largest employee union, represents about 37,000 state workers.
