Governor Announces $8.5 Million In ITP Grants
SPRINGFIELD -- Governor George H. Ryan today announced more than $8.5 million in Industrial Training Program (ITP) funds have been awarded to upgrade the skills of over 33,000 new and current workers. The grants have been awarded to forty-five entities, including eight companies that will use the funds to instruct their workers and the employees of their suppliers.
"A well-trained, quality workforce is vital to our state's economic health and the Industrial Training Program is an effective tool to assist Illinois companies and upgrade the skills of Illinois workers," Ryan said. "We have committed over $24 million dollars in this fiscal year to ensure that Illinois workers are kept up-to-date on the latest technological innovations that will help them do their jobs better and make their companies more successful."
The Illinois Department of Commerce and Community Affairs (DCCA) administers the Industrial Training Program grants on a competitive basis. ITP grants are used as matching funds that reimburse companies or organizations up to 50 percent of eligible training costs.
Among the latest ITP grant recipients are the Illinois Cast Metal Association in Tazewell County and the Valley Industrial Association in Kane County. Those two organizations combined will provide training to over 4,000 workers.
"ITP has been a very effective program in helping draw new businesses to the state," added DCCA Director Pam McDonough, "By being proactive and keeping Illinois workers on the cutting edge of their respective industries, we reduce the potential for an in-state company to look beyond Illinois' borders to meet its workforce needs."
