Governor Announces Nearly $1 Million For Homeless Shelters

SPRINGFIELD - Governor George H. Ryan today announced grants totaling more than $995,000 will be awarded to help 80 not-for-profit organizations enhance the emergency assistance they provide to the homeless.

"There are still many unfortunate people in communities across our state who are homeless," Ryan said. "With the additional funding, the agencies will be able to provide not only shelter, but also services to guide the homeless toward self-sufficiency."

The Department of Human Services will administer the grants through the Emergency Food and Shelter Program to support agencies in communities throughout Illinois currently providing services on a regular basis to homeless persons or persons at risk of becoming homeless. Funding was limited to participating members of the statewide Continuum of Care system.

Agencies are using the award money for shelter rehabilitation, furniture, appliances, office equipment, vehicles for direct client services and shelter upgrades to comply with health and safety codes. Agencies are also required to have supportive services available to clients to assist them in returning to self-sufficiency. These services include counseling, referral, follow-up and placement into permanent, affordable housing.

"We selected agencies with substantial need and with service systems in place to support the homeless population," Acting DHS Secretary Nancy DeMarco said. "This additional funding will help ensure that agencies throughout the state are better equipped to help families by giving them the supports they need to make it on their own."

Attached is a list of grant recipients for the Emergency food and Shelter Program.
