'Illinois FIRST' To Fund Improvements At Southern Illinois Airport

SPRINGFIELD -- Governor George H. Ryan today approved the release of more than $185,000 in Illinois FIRST funds for improvements at the Southern Illinois Airport. in Carbondale.

"As a growing airport serving one of the country's largest aviation schools, Southern Illinois Airport plays a vital role for Southern Illinois and the entire state," Ryan said. "The improvements made possible with these funds emphasize Illinois' commitment to remaining a leader in air transportation."

Ryan released $187,500 in state funds to expand the eastside apron to accommodate the growing needs of Southern Illinois University's School of Aviation.

"This appropriation underscores our commitment to safe and efficient air service to all parts of Illinois," Ryan added.

Work is expected to begin May 1 and is to be completed in mid-July. Total cost for this project is $375,000 with the state funds being matched with $187,500 in local funds.
