SPRINGFIELD, IL – The 2006-07 Illinois deer seasons have concluded with hunters taking a preliminary total of 197,287 deer.
Hunters participating in the Late-Winter Antlerless-only Deer Season last weekend took 9,075 deer in the 67 counties open for the season. The harvest during the Special CWD deer hunt in five northern Illinois counties totaled 625. Both the Late-Winter and Special CWD seasons were conducted Jan. 12-14.
Archery hunters in Illinois harvested a preliminary statewide total of 65,170 deer during the 2006-07 archery deer season which began last Oct. 1 and concluded on Jan. 11.
The updated preliminary harvest total for the Illinois Firearm Deer Season last fall (Nov. 17-19 and Nov. 30-Dec. 3) was 115,379, while hunters took 5,939 deer during the Illinois Muzzleloader-only Deer Season (Dec. 8-10).
The preliminary harvest total from the Youth Firearm Deer Season last Oct. 7-8 was 1,099 deer.
“We are pleased with our deer season harvest totals and want to thank hunters in Illinois for their support of our deer herd management and hunting programs,” said Illinois Department of Natural Resources Forest Wildlife Program Manager Paul Shelton. “The preliminary archery harvest total tells us hunters in Illinois last fall and early this winter enjoyed plenty of good deer hunting opportunity in all parts of the state. Wet and icy weather in many parts of the state may have been factors during the Late-Winter season, but harvest still topped last year’s total.”
The preliminary archery harvest total for the 2006-07 season compares with a statewide archery deer harvest of 66,581 during the 2005-06 season.
The preliminary harvest for the Late-Winter season in 2006 was 5,128.
During the 2006-07 archery season, the top five county harvest totals based on preliminary harvest data were Pike (4,248), Fulton (1,556), Jefferson (1,513), Adams (1,481) and Peoria (1,391).
The preliminary harvest results for the Late-Winter season show the following counties with the top harvest totals: Pike (559), Jefferson (328), Randolph (287), Fulton (278) and Wayne (271).
Preliminary harvest totals by county for the Illinois archery deer season and the Late-Winter and Special CWD seasons can be found in the tables below. (Please note that Ogle Co. was included in the Special CWD season this year after having been open during the Late-Winter deer season last year).
