IDNR awards Illinois Biodiversity Field Trip Grants
Funds to assist more than 2,000 students in learning about nature and conservation

SPRINGFIELD, IL – Illinois Department of Natural Resources (IDNR) Acting Director Sam Flood today announced more than $25,000 in Illinois Biodiversity Field Trip Grants. The grants will assist more than 2,000 students from more than 30 classrooms statewide in visiting Illinois state parks, museums and other natural resources sites to learn about nature and conservation.

“Illinois’ natural resources are meant to be experienced, and this program helps students take what they’re learning in the classroom to outdoor locations for an up-close look,” said Director Flood.  “These grants help facilitate a whole new world for students, who may not otherwise have such an opportunity.”

Thirty-two grants totaling $25,707 are being awarded for 2007.  A generous donation to the Illinois Conservation Foundation from the Independence Tube Corporation of Chicago and contributions from Illinois citizens provide funding for this popular program.

“Grant recipients are located throughout Illinois and represent students from pre-kindergarten through high school,” said Valerie Keener, administrator of the IDNR Division of Education.  “Since its inception, the program has distributed more than $195,000 and reached more than 23,000 students.”

The competitive grant program that started in 2001, allows Illinois teachers to apply for funds to take students out of the classroom to study some aspect of Illinois’ biodiversity. Learning activities must be related to the Illinois Learning Standards from the Illinois State Board of Education.  The annual application deadline is January 31 each year.  Funding is administered by the Illinois Conservation Foundation and covers expenses such as the costs of transportation and substitute teachers.

The application form is available online.  It can be downloaded at http://dnr.state.il.us/lands/education/classrm/grants.htm or requested through the online order form at http://dnr.state.il.us/lands/education/CLASSRM/edmats02.htm.  For more information about the Illinois Biodiversity Field Trip Grant Program, contact Valerie Keener at valerie.keener@illinois.gov or 217-785-0973.
