Illinois Arts Council Announces FY07 Literary Awards
Quality New Writing by Illinois Writers in Illinois Not-for-Profit Literary Magazines

Chicago – The Illinois Arts Council (IAC) is pleased to announce the writers and literary publications selected to receive IAC Literary Awards in 2007. IAC Literary Awards recognize the creative excellence of Illinois writers and promote awareness of non-commercial publishing in the state. Companion awards of $1,000 each are given to the writer and publication in which the writer’s work was published. 

The following dedicated arts professionals served as jurors charged with the responsibility of reviewing applications and making funding recommendations for the 2007 IAC Literary Awards. Jurors are chosen on the basis of their professional achievements and broad knowledge of the arts to represent a range of artistic styles:

- R.T. Smith of Fairfield, VA.
- Brenda Shaughnessy of Brooklyn, NY.
- Dierdre McNamer of Missoula, MT.
 
2007 IAC Literary Award recipients are listed below in alphabetical order by literary magazine title.

• Maggie Kast of Chicago for the creative non-fiction story "The Crack Between the Worlds” published in Chicago by Another Chicago Magazine, Vol. 46, edited by Barry Silesky.

• Joe Meno of Chicago for the fiction story “What a Schoolgirl You Are” published in Chicago by Other Voices, Vol. 44, edited by Gina Frangello.

• Brigid Pasulka of Chicago for the fiction story "How to be a Dissident” published in Chicago by Other Voices, Vol. 44, edited by Gina Frangello. 

• Carolyn Alessio of Chicago for the fiction story "Mijo” published in Chicago by TriQuarterly, Vol. 125, edited by Susan Firestone Hahn.

• Natania Rosenfeld of Galesburg for the poem "Bodies" published in Chicago by Another Chicago Magazine, Vol. 46, edited by Barry Silesky.

• Emily Gray Tedrowe of Chicago for the fiction story "Claudia Leaving" published in Carbondale by Crab Orchard Review, Vol. 11, number 2, edited by Allison Joseph.

• Joyce Goldenstein of Chicago for the fiction story "To Know Which Way the Cat Jumps, The Cookie Crumbles, The Wind Blows" published in Charleston by Karamu, spring 2006, edited by Olga Abella.

• Arlynn Presser of Winnetka for the creative nonfiction story "The Ghost Light" published in Chicago by TriQuarterly, Vol. 125, edited by Susan Firestone Hahn.

• Nancy Burke of Evanston for the poem "Secrets” published in Normal  by  The Spoon River Poetry Review, Vol. 31.2, edited by Lucia Cordell Getsi (retired 2006) & Tara Reeser.

• Kevin Stein of Dunlap for the poem " Middle-Aged Adam and Eve's Bedside Tables” published in Carbondale by Crab Orchard Review, Vol. 11, number 2, edited by Allison Joseph.

• Jen Garfield of Deerfield for the poem "Punctuation" published in Charleston by Karamu, spring 2006, edited by Olga Abella.
