Historic Train Depot Receives State Grant
BROOKFIELD -- Governor George H. Ryan today announced a $97,000 grant to the village of Brookfield for the rehabilitation of its historic train depot.
"This project will preserve a focal point for the community by allowing the depot to continue to be used as a museum," Ryan said.
"This project is extremely important to the community, both for its ongoing vitality and deep heritage. Representative William O'Connor's support of the grant was a crucial component in getting the funding approved," Ryan said.
The project will replace the existing dilapidated roofing at the depot with a slate roof. It will return the structure to its original condition as well as weatherproof it.
Weatherproofing is critically important because the depot houses the Brookfield Historical Society and irreplaceable artifacts. The artifacts are historically relevant to the Village and the early days of the Burlington Northern Railroad.
"I remain committed to pursuing funding to improve the infrastructure and commercial strength of the Village of Brookfield with due observance to its history," said Representative O'Connor. "This grant is another example of that commitment, like the $1.4 million infrastructure funding already approved this year."
