Ryan Names New Employement Security Director

Press Release - Wednesday, February 02, 2000

SPRINGFIELD -- Governor George H. Ryan today appointed Gertrude W. Jordan as the new Director of the Illinois Department of Employment Security (IDES).

"Having worked for more than 30 years with local, state and federal employment issues, Gertrude brings a wealth of hands-on experience to the Department of Employment Security," Ryan said. "She will play an important role in our efforts to maintain and build upon this state's strong economy. I look forward to working with her to promote opportunities for all Illinois workers."

Jordan, 66, of Chicago, was appointed Assistant Director of the Department of Central Management Services in February of last year, a post she previously held from 1979 to 1985. Jordan has also helped administer the state's Business Enterprise Program which promotes the development of businesses owned by minorities, females and persons with disabilities. In addition, she has held senior-level positions with both the Chicago Housing Authority and the U.S. Department of Housing & Urban Development.

In addition to operating Illinois Employment and Training Centers in communities throughout Illinois, IDES administers the state's employment services, unemployment insurance system and labor market information. Each year the department matches more than 75,000 workers with new employment opportunities and refers qualified workers to employers with job openings.

Jordan replaces Linda Renee' Baker, who was recently named Secretary of the state's Department of Human Services.
