Veterans' Affairs Director Names Weldon Resident as State of Illinois' May "Veteran of the Month"

Press Release - Wednesday, May 27, 2009

WELDON - Director of the Illinois Department of Veterans' Affairs (IDVA) Dan Grant today named lifelong Illinoisan Ken Moore as the State of Illinois' May 2009 "Veteran of the Month" for his unwavering dedication to the state's Veterans and the safety and well-being of the members of his community.

The "Veteran of the Month" award is a distinction that is given monthly to military Veterans who give back to their community and continue to serve other Veterans.  Moore was honored with the prestigious award this afternoon during a special ceremony at the American Legion Post 103 in Clinton.

"Ken Moore not only served his country in uniform, but he continued to serve the members of his community and his fellow comrades for many years after his military service was complete.  I am extremely proud that today we honor and thank Ken for his service by presenting him with the State of Illinois' May ‘Veteran of the Month' award," said IDVA Director Dan Grant.

Moore proudly and honorably served in the United States Army from 1965-1967, served in the Reserves for a couple of years and then served in the United States Navy from 1975-1978.

Ken Moore is a United States Army Veteran having served from 1965 to 1967, but was also a Reservist and even a member of the United States Navy from 1975 to 1978.

When Ken returned home, he continued to serve his country and community as a civilian.

He wanted to do something for the Veterans of the VA Illiana Health Care in Danville so he began a fundraising campaign to raise money so they could purchase items the Vets needed.  He raised more than $11,000, then went out and purchased items from the hospital wish list.  They included coats, gloves, t-shirts, sweaters, pajamas, shower shoes and toiletries among other things...and also, two Wii video game units and 12 flat-screen TVs!

Ken is a member of the AMVETS, Elks and Fraternal Order of Eagles and has been involved in the community for years.  He has helped with local Lions Club events and the Post Office food drive.

Ken's dedication to Veterans is known throughout the community.  He has served this country, in one way or another, all his life - always going above and beyond to help others.

Born on May 23, 1947, Moore has spent the better part of his life in DeWitt County living the past 12 years in Weldon.

The "Veteran of the Month" award highlights the work of community activists who are also military Veterans.  Each month the Department recognizes a different person or group that contributes to the betterment of communities across the state of Illinois.  To nominate a "Veteran of the Month," please visit IDVA's website at veterans.illinois.gov or call IDVA at (312) 814-5538 to obtain a list of guidelines and a nomination form.
