IDOT Suspends Lane Closures over Labor Day Weekend to Give Motorists a Break

CHICAGO - With thousands of people traveling over the upcoming holiday weekend,  the Illinois Department of Transportation (IDOT) announced today that road work will be suspended where possible to make for a smoother drive for motorists this Labor Day weekend.  IDOT and the Illinois State Police (ISP) also want to remind travelers to drive sober in the midst of this year's "YOU DRINK & DRIVE. YOU LOSE. "campaign.

IDOT has opened up various construction zones for the Labor Day weekend.  IDOT restrictions are from 3 p.m., Friday, September 4, through midnight, Monday September 7. 

"Labor Day weekend is a time when everyone wants to get out and spend time with family and friends and we want to urge drivers as well as passengers to drive responsibly before hitting the roadways and that means staying sober," Illinois Transportation Secretary Gary Hannig said.  "We ask that drivers allow for extra travel time and get the latest information on construction and travel times before getting on the road.  We are suspending construction wherever possible, to keep drivers and workers safe and also to make travel as smooth as possible."

Holiday travelers are reminded that work zone speed limits will continue to be in effect 24/7 in all construction zones.  Motorists should continue to watch for changing traffic patterns and use caution, especially when workers are present.  The minimum fine for speeding in a work zone is $375, whether there are workers present or not.  Posted signs advise motorists of a $10,000 fine and 14-year jail sentence for hitting a roadway worker.

Permanent Work Zones and Closures Remain in Place

In the greater Chicagoland area, all lanes on the Edens, Eisenhower, Kennedy, Stevenson, Tri-State Tollway (I-94, I-294, I-80) Northwest Tollway (I-90), as well as I-80 and I-57 will be open.

However, due to the nature of some projects, there will be construction zones throughout the state that will continue to operate.  This work is not expected to impact traffic and will help keep projects on schedule.  IDOT is urging motorists to slow down and proceed with caution through these work zones. 

Motorists are advised to check IDOT's Web site www.gettingaroundillinois.com for information regarding road conditions and updates on road construction.  IDOT Interstate road condition information is also available at 1-800-452-IDOT (4368). 

Areas that will continue to have lane closures are as follows:

COOK COUNTY:

I-57 @ 103rd, 112th, 115th & 125th  in Calumet Park & Chicago. 
Bridge reconstruction includes shoulder closures on I-57 & staged construction on bridges

26th St. and I-55 Frontage Rd. B over the Franklin Connector in Chicago. 
Bridge construction requires 31st St. to be closed.  A detour is posted

I-90 at Central in Chicago.  Bridge construction with one lane open in each direction

I-90 at Sayre Ave. in Chicago.  Bridge construction with one lane open in each direction

31st St from Cicero Ave to Kostner Ave. in Chicago.   Resurfacing & Bridge construction with one lane open in each direction.

I-90/94 from Hubbard's Cave to I-290 in Chicago.  Reconstruction with simultaneous closing and reconstruction of Jackson Blvd. Ramp, Adams St. Ramp and Monroe Ramp located on the eastbound side of the Kennedy Expressway. The Monroe Exit ramp located on the westbound side will permanently close at this time. Traffic to the Loop will be detoured to Madison St. and other adjacent open ramps within this corridor

LAKE COUNTY:

US 45/IL 21 at IL 22 in Buffalo Grove, Lincolnshire & Riverwoods.  Roadway reconstruction with one lane in each direction on US 41 over IL 132 and on IL 132 under US 41.

Erick St. to Pingree Rd. in Crystal Lake. Resurfacing with one lane in each direction.

Shorewood Rd. between IL 83 and Rollins in Grayslake.  Widening and Reconstruction work requires the road to be closed.  Detour is posted.

US Rte 41, Skokie High way over IL Rte 132 Roadway  in Gurnee.  Bridge & Interchange Reconstruction with one lane in each direction on US 41 over IL 132 and on IL 132 under US 41.

US 12 from Rt. 22 to June Terrace in Lake Zurich.  Storm Sewer work with staged traffic control set up with a permanent lane closure.  Two lanes of traffic are open in each direction. 

IL 137 over the Des Plaines River in Libertyville.  Bridge work with one lane in each direction on US 41 over IL 132 and on IL 132 under US 41.

Erick Street from a two-lane roadway to a three-lane roadway with a bi-directional left turn lane from Crystal Lake Avenue to IL Route 176 North Chicago.  Resurfacing Intermittent lane closures.

Martin Luther King Drive from IL 31 to IL 137 in North Chicago.  Resurfacing with one lane open in each direction.

MCHENRY COUNTY:
IL 68 between Healy Rd. in Barrington Hills.  Culvert Replacement with traffic reduced to one lane with traffic signals to direct flow of traffic.

CARROLL COUNTY:
US 52 over the Mississippi River between Savanna, IL and Sabula, Iowa. Bridge rehabilitation restricts traffic to one lane controlled by traffic signals.

HENRY COUNTY:
IL 82 east of Cambridge. Replacement of the culvert 2 miles north of IL 81. Road is closed and traffic detoured onto the County Highway north out of Cambridge. 

JODAVIESS COUNTY:
IL 78 south of Stockton.  Replacement of a large culvert  restricts traffic to one lane controlled by temporary traffic signals just north of the Carroll County line.

IL 84 north of Hanover. Replacement of the bridge over Irish Hollow Creek restricts traffic to one lane controlled by temporary traffic signals.

OGLE COUNTY:
IL 64 east of US 52 at Brookville. IL 64 is closed and traffic detoured on IL 26 and US 52 for replacement of a bridge over Five Mile Creek.

ROCK ISLAND COUNTY:
 I-74 from the Mississippi River bridge to IL 5 in Moline is restricted to one lane northbound to complete bridge deck repairs to 10 structures and repair and resurface the 3 mile section of roadway.

I-80 from the Mississippi River to I-88 is restricted to one lane in each direction using the eastbound lanes as the westbound lanes have been removed and new pavement will be constructed.

 I-80 over the Mississippi River is open to only one lane in each direction due to emergency repairs needed to the outside lanes of the bridge.

IL 92 (Centennial Expressway) from north of 7th Avenue to the Rock River in the City of Rock Island will be restricted to one lane in each direction as the bridges at the IL 92 interchanges with 7th Avenue, 18th Avenue and 31st Avenue are all replaced one half at a time.

WHITESIDE COUNTY :
US 30 west of Rock Falls. Replacement of the bridge expansion joints at the structure over Elkhorn Creek restricts traffic to one lane controlled by temporary traffic signals.

WINNEBAGO COUNTY:
US 20 at the IL 251 interchange at the south edge of Rockford. Replacement of the bridge carrying US 20 over IL 251 restricts traffic on both routes to one lane in each direction.
IL 75 at the Rock River bridge at the south edge of Rockton. Repairs to the bridge  restricts traffic to one lane controlled by temporary traffic signals.
IL 251 (Kishwaukee Street) in Rockford from Harrison Avenue to 15th Street. Removal and replacement of the roadway pavement has restricted traffic to one lane in each direction.

FORD COUNTY:
 Illinois 9, just east of Illinois 115, Box culvert replacement, One lane open across culvert, controlled by signals.

GRUNDY COUNTY:
Illinois 47, just south of Mazon, Bridge replacement, One lane open across bridge, controlled by signals.

LASALLE COUNTY:

KENDALL COUNTY:

KNOX COUNTY:
I-74 between mile marker 51 & 54.  Bridge replacement reduces traffic to one lane in each direction.  Traffic is channeled utilizing temporary crossovers.

IL 97, 4 miles south of Maquon.  Bridge beam replacement restricts traffic to one lane controlled by temporary traffic signals.

US 34 over I-74.  Replacement of both bridges reduces traffic to one lane in each direction.

FULTON COUNTY:
IL 116 west of London Mills.  Box Culvert replacement restricts traffic to one lane controlled by temporary traffic signals.

PEORIA COUNTY:
IL 78 in Laura.  Pavement replacement restricts traffic to one lane controlled by temporary traffic signals.

IL 29 in Mossville.  Bridge replacement reduces traffic to one lane in each direction.

Airport Rd at IL 116 in Peoria.  Bridge and pavement replacement reduces traffic to one lane in each direction.

PUTNAM COUNTY:
IL 26 south of IL 71.  Bridge replacement restricts traffic to one lane controlled by temporary traffic signals.

MARSHALL COUNTY:
IL 17 two miles west of Sparland.  Bridge replacement restricts traffic to one lane controlled by temporary traffic signals.

IL 251 between Wenona and IL 18.  Bridge replacement has road closed with marked detour route on I-39.
IL 17 over I-39.  Bridge rehab will have traffic with one lane in each direction on temporary pavement.

TAZEWELL COUNTY:
IL 29 south of Pekin.  Culvert replacement restricts traffic to one lane controlled by temporary signals.

HENDERSON COUNTY:
IL 116 East of Media, IL 116 closed for pavement removal and replacement.  Traffic will be detoured south on CH 8 to Raritan, and then west on CH 9 to IL 94 and then north to IL 116.

MCDONOUGH COUNTY:
IL 9 North of Bushnell box culvert work restricts traffic to one lane controlled by temporary signals.

MERCER COUNTY:

US 150 2.9 miles north of Illinois 9.  Bridge joint repair restricts traffic to one lane in each direction.  Barrier wall is in place.
Interstate 74 7.6 miles east of US 51 (WB).  Bridge replacement will restrict (WB) I-74 to one lane.  Barrier wall is in place.
Interstate 74 north of the I-55 Business Loop to east of US 51 at Bloomington.  Bridge repair restricts traffic to one lane in each direction.  Barrier wall is in place.

DOUGLAS COUNTY:
US 36 2.4 miles east of I-57.  Bridge replacement restricts traffic to one lane controlled by temporary traffic signals and barrier wall.

CHAMPAIGN COUNTY:
Illinois 49 4 miles south of Homer.  Bridge replacement restricts traffic to one lane controlled by temporary traffic signals and barrier wall.

US 24 - Quincy Bayview Bridge over the Mississippi River.   Bridge maintenance reduces two lanes of one-way traffic to one lane.

IL 59 from US 52 (Jefferson St.) to Caton Farm Rd. in Joliet.  Traffic signal work includes 2 lane hwy with day time lane closures from Caton Farm Rd to US 52, traffic will be reduce to 1 lane with flaggers.  Motorists should expect delays.

I-57 Manhattan-Monee Rd. entrance and exit ramps in Monee.  Roadway reconstruction with the right and left shoulders closed and lanes reduced on Manhattan-Monee Rd & NB I-57 @ Manhattan-Monee Rd. & on SB exit to Manhattan-Monee Rd.  No lane closures expected on I-57 north and southbound.
