Ryan Announces $23 Million In Community Water and Sewer Grants
SPRINGFIELD -- Governor George H. Ryan today announced that over $23 million in grants are being awarded to 87 villages, cities, townships and counties for the improvement and upkeep of vital water and sewage infrastructure.
The grants are made available through the Illinois Department of Commerce and Community Affairs' Community Development Assistance Program (CDAP).
"These grants, coupled with Illinois FIRST funds, will allow many rural Illinois communities to build or improve one of the most basic and necessary aspects of infrastructure -- water and sewage," Ryan said. "We want to make sure that all Illinois cities and towns have the very best public facilities possible to ensure the health and safety of our citizens."
Illinois FIRST, the governor's five-year, $12 billion infrastructure program, includes more than $650 million to upgrade sewer and water systems throughout the state. Illinois FIRST also supports both the Water Pollution Control Revolving Loan Program and the Drinking Water Revolving Loan Program. Support of these environmentally-friendly initiatives leverages five dollars in federal assistance for each state dollar invested.
"Without Illinois FIRST, the state simply would not be able to assist the many communities that desparately need to make sewer and water improvements," Ryan added.
The CDAP grants will assist communities with projects that address threats to public health and safety, and will mainly benefit low and middle income residents. For example, Madison Township in Richland County will receive $400,000 to construct water lines for approximately 125 rural residences which currently use private well water. Many of the wells have been tested and found to be contaminated and unfit for human consumption.
"These CDAP grants will make a positive difference in the lives of thousands of Illinois citizens," said DCCA Director Pam McDonough. "The projects funded by these grants will not only address immediate public safety concerns but also improve long-term economic conditions."
The grants, which are funded by the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development , will be administered by the Department of Commerce and Community Affairs (DCCA) over a two year period.
A list of grant recipients is attached.
