Cuban Boy Returns to Chicago for Medical Treatment

Press Release - Friday, October 13, 2000

CHICAGO -- Governor George H. Ryan's humanitarian mission to Cuba last October established a foundation of friendship and cooperation that has led to the return of a seven year-old boy to Children's Memorial Hospital for a life-saving surgical procedure.

"Our humanitarian mission built a bridge of goodwill between the people of Cuba and the people of Illinois," said Governor Ryan. "This little boy's return to Illinois shows what can be accomplished when neighbors reach out to each other."

The patient, Raudel Medina Alfonso, is being accompanied to the United States by his mother and two Cuban physicians. The two Cuban doctors will observe the surgery and learn about other pediatric procedures from staff at Children's before returning home.

During his stay at Children's Memorial Hospital, Raudel will undergo surgery to correct a liver ailment called portal vein thrombosis. Dr. Ricardo Superina will perform an innovative medical procedure known as a "Rex Shunt."

"I want to personally thank Dr. Ricardo Superina and the staff at Children's Memorial for agreeing to treat Raudel and work with his doctors from Cuba to ensure he receives the medical attention he needs," Ryan said.

More details about Raudel's treatment will be provided during a medical briefing at Children's Memorial Hospital on Tuesday afternoon.
