IDOT Announces Construction Lane Closures over Memorial Day Weekend

SPRINGFIELD - With thousands of motorists expected to travel on state roadways over the Memorial Day holiday weekend, the Illinois Department of Transportation (IDOT) announced today that road work will be suspended where possible to reduce potential congestion and improve traffic flow.  The advance notice of lane closures for the Memorial Day weekend is designed to provide supplemental information to aid motorists’ travel plans and improve roadway safety.

“Memorial Day is a pinnacle holiday in American culture that often involves families and friends traveling long distances to reunite,” said Illinois Transportation Secretary Gary Hannig. “IDOT is committed to public safety and has provided a list of anticipated closures in advance to help motorists plan their trips over the holiday weekend.  With less construction and heavy equipment in use this weekend, traffic congestion can be reduced, and safety and traffic flow continues to improve.”

Starting at 3 p.m. Friday, May 27, IDOT will suspend all non-emergency road work and open up all lanes where possible until midnight Monday, May 30.  However, due to the nature of some projects, some construction zones throughout the state will continue to have lane closures in effect. 

IDOT is urging motorists to slow down, obey posted speed limits and drive with caution through these work zones.  Holiday travelers are reminded that work zone speed limits are still in effect wherever they are posted.

Following are locations where permanent lane closures remain in place:
          

IDOT Highway District 1:

Cook County

Intersection of Glenview & Greenwood - intersection reconstruction – staged traffic control – one lane in each direction.

159th St. (US 6) from I-294 to east of IL 1 (Halsted St.)  Reconstruction  - 159th St. closed from Park Ave. to Center St.,  Detour posted using IL 1 (Halsted St.) Sibley Blvd., and Dixie Highway.   One lane closed on 159th St. from I 294 to Park Ave. and from Center St. to east of Halsted. 

I-57 at 111th in Chicago, bridge reconstruction – shoulder closures on I-57.  111th St. closed at I-57, traffic detoured to 112th Place.

US 12/45 over the SOO Line Railroad and Franklin Ave. -  bridge construction – 2 of 3 lanes open in each direction.

Palatine Road at Plum Grove Road – reconstruction – Palatine Road one way traffic westbound-US 14 Plum Grove Road.

Bluff Avenue, from 47th St. to Cossitt Ave. Reconstruction – road closed, detour signs are posted.

175th St. at Harlem Avenue – reconstruction – road closed, detour signs are posted.

79th Street over CSX RR – bridge deck overlay – NB and SB, one lane open in each direction.

159th St. (US 6) from I-294 to east of IL 1 (Halsted St., for reconstruction with 159th St. closed from Park Ave. to Center St., detour posed using IL 1 (Halsted St.) Sibley Blvd. and Dixie Highway.  One lane closed on 159th St. from I-294 to Park Ave. and from Center St. to east of Halsted.  Also one lane closed in each direction of Dixie Highway, Wood St., Park Ave. & IL 1 (Halsted St. at 159th St.)

Southwest Highway over the B&O RR (south-west of Ridgeland Ave.) with bridge and intersection reconstruction with one lane closed in each direction of Southwest Highway & Ridgeland Ave..

Roosevelt Road/Harlem to Austin – reconstruction – staged traffic control – one lane in each direction.

Intersection of Glenview and Greenwood:  intersection reconstruction – staged traffic control – one lane in each direction.

St. Charles Road – 5th Ave. to 21st Ave., reconstruction – one lane in each direction.

East Frontage Road over Salt Creek Bridge rehabilitation – one lane in each direction.

Whitehall Avenue over Addison Creek and Prater - bridge removal and replacement – road closed – please follow detour.

Elston Avenue over the Edens Expressway – interchange reconstruction – one lane is open in each direction.

Will County

Lily Cache Lane (Veteran’s Parkway to Creekside Dr.) – pavement reconstruction – one lane open in each direction.

West River Road over an unnamed tributary to the Kankakee River.  Box culvert replacement – road closed - detour posted.

IL 59 from I-55 to IL 12-major reconstruction – 2 lane highway with daytime lane closures from I-55 to IL 126 in Shorewood and Plainfield.  Motorists should expect delays.

I-55 over the Kankakee River – bridge rehabilitation – one lane closed on northbound I-55 from Lorenzo Road to North River Road, entrance ramp to southbound I-55 from North River road – closed – detour posted.  Exit ramp from southbound I-55 to Lorenzo Road closed – detour posted.

IL 394 and IL 1 at Goodenow Road – intersection reconstruction and bridge reconstruction – one lane closed NB IL 394.

DuPage County

US 20 at York Road/I-290 – interchange reconstruction – one lane open in each direction.

Wesley Street and Manchester Road over the Union Pacific RR – Illinois Prairie Path Bridge – road closed, detour posted.

Washington St., - pavement patching – one way traffic westbound on IL 59 to IL 38.

Villa Ave. from Madison to St. Charles, reconstruction – road closed to through traffic.

Short St. over the east branch of the DuPage River – bridge reconstruction, road closed – posted detour.

22nd Street from IL 83 to IL 56 – roadway reconstruction with new traffic signals – two lanes open in each direction.

Kane County

IL 31 and Oak Road Bridge deck replacement – one lane open in each direction.

           

Lake County

US 45 from IL 120 to Washington St., roadway reconstruction and widening – one lane of traffic in each direction with left two lanes at signalized intersections.

IL 83 at IL 132 – intersection improvement – one lane of traffic in each direction with left turn lane at the intersection.

IL 173 over the Des Plaines River – beam replacement – signal at bridge will allow only one lane of traffic at a time.

IL 173 over the boat channels, 1.8 miles and 2.5 miles west of IL 59 – bridge replacement, bridge superstructure replacement.  – signals at bridges allow one lane of traffic at a time.

IL 47 from Reed Road at Kreutzer – roadway reconstruction with new traffic signals –  one lane in each direction with left turn lanes at signalized intersections.

IL 83 from Petite Lake Road to Wisconsin State Line.  Widening including drainage with new signals – one lane closed in each direction.
 
I-94 North South Freeway Project – from Russell Road to Illinois/Wisconsin State Line-(project continues into Wisconsin 250’ which WI is conducting) reconstruction of I-94, 2 lanes closed in each direction.

McHenry County

Union Road over South Branch of Kishwaukee River – bridge replacement – road closed starting 5/23/2011

IL 47 from Reed Road at Kreutzer. Kane/McHenry Roadway reconstruction with new traffic signals. One lane open in each direction with left turn lanes at signalized intersections.  (also in Kane County)

Dunhanm Road over North Branch of Kishwaukee River - bridge replacement  - road closed to traffic.

IDOT Highway District 2

Henry County

IL 92 one half mile west of IL 78. Replacement of the culvert over a drainage ditch, one lane open and controlled by temporary traffic signals.

IL 82 4.5 miles south of IL 92. Replacement of the Green River bridge north of Geneseo, one lane open and controlled by temporary traffic signals.

JoDaviess County

IL 84 at the north edge of Hanover. Replacement of the bridge over Duke Creek, one lane open and controlled by temporary traffic signals.

Lee County

I-39 from Rochelle to north of Mendota. One lane open in each direction as the bridges and roadway are rehabilitated.

Ogle County

IL 2 from Oregon to Byron is closed for reconstruction as the pavement is being removed and replaced. IL 2 traffic is detoured on River Road.

IL 251 over the Union Pacific and Burlington Northern Railroad lines in Rochelle is closed to make structure repairs. Traffic is detoured around the bridge on IL 38 and Jack Dame Road.

Rock Island County

I-280 from IL 92 to Airport Road at Milan is restricted to one lane in each direction with traffic using the westbound lanes as the bridges on the eastbound lanes are being removed and replaced.

I-74 ramps at Seventh Avenue in Moline are closed while the bridges over 19th Street are being replaced. Traffic is detoured on 19th Street to the interchange at The Avenue of the Cities. 

IL 92 in Moline and Rock Island will be restricted to one lane in each direction as roadway repairs are underway from 38th Street in Rock Island to 48th Street in Moline.

Whiteside County

US 30 near the west edge of Morrison  is restricted to one lane controlled by temporary traffic signals just east of the Rock Creek bridge as the pavement is being removed and replaced.

IL 40 two miles north of Sterling. Replacement of the bridge over Elkhorn Creek restricts traffic to one lane controlled by temporary traffic signals.

Winnebago County

IL 251 at the Spring Creek Road interchange in Rockford. Traffic is restricted to two lanes in each direction during replacement of the IL 251 bridges over Spring Creek Road.

Bureau County

 Interstate 80, MP 55, eastbound only, one lane closed for bridge painting.

 Interstate 80, MP 61 to 70, one lane closed in each direction for bridge replacements.

Illinois 89, just south of LaMoille, one lane closed for bridge replacement, traffic controlled by signals.

Illinois 40, 1 mile south of Buda, one lane closed for bridge repairs, traffic controlled by signals.

IDOT Highway District 4

Tazewell County

IL 9 0.5 miles west of Mackinaw will be one lane controlled by signals due to bridge construction.

Warren County
 
US 67 approx 2 miles north of Monmouth will be one lane controlled by signals due to bridge construction.

Henderson County

IL 164 approx 2 miles east of Oquawka will be one lane controlled by signals due to bridge construction.

IL 94/IL 116 approx 2 miles north of Stronghurst will be one lane controlled by signals due to bridge construction

McDonough County

IL 9 at the west edge of Blandinsville will be one lane controlled by signals due to box culvert construction.

Woodford County

IL 251 1 mile north of US 24 (El Paso) is closed due to bridge construction.  There is a marked detour route that includes US 24, I-39 and IL 116.

Knox County

I-74 from CH 9 to the E. Main Street interchange will have traffic reduced to one lane in each direction.

Peoria County

US 24 will be reduced to one lane in each direction for bridge work 2.3 miles east of Mapelton.

IDOT Highway District 5

McLean County

Interstate 55 bridge replacements over Interstate 74 (eastbound) and Interstate 55 Business (southbound) southwest of Bloomington; bridge replacement. Barrier wall is in place.

Interstate 55 from FAI-39 to Veterans Parkway Interchange northeast of Normal; additional lanes project with no restrictions at this point in time.  Barrier wall is in place.
Illinois 165 bridge replacement at Money Creek 2.9 miles north of Illinois 9; bridge replacement.  Barrier wall is in place.

Dewitt County

Illinois 54 culvert replacement at Coon Creek, 2 miles northeast of Clinton; culvert replacement restricts traffic.  A temporary runaround with temporary bridge traffic signals is in place.

Vermilion  County

Interstate 74 bridge deck waterproofing of the structures at Stony Creek, 2.4 miles east of Illinois 49.  Barrier wall is in place.

Adams County

IL 104 over Grindstone Creek, 2 miles west of Beverly Road, near Kingston.  Bridge reconstruction reduces traffic to one lane controlled by traffic signals.

IL 78 over Wolf Lake located north of Chandlerville at Cass and Mason County Line.  Bridge reconstruction reduces traffic to one lane controlled by traffic signals.

Hancock County

IL 9 over LaHarpe Creek, 2 miles east of LaHarpe.  Bridge reconstruction reduces traffic to one lane controlled by traffic signals.

IL 96 over Railroad Creek at the south limits of Hamilton.  Bridge reconstruction reduces traffic to one lane controlled by traffic signals.

IL 96 over Riley Creek located south of Nauvoo.  Bridge reconstruction reduces traffic to one lane controlled by traffic signals.

Logan County

I-55 SB from Fruit Road to I55/70/270 will have a lane closure for roadway reconstruction.

IL 162 over I-55/70 at Troy.  On IL 162 to one lane in each direction will remain open.

St. Clair County

I-64 will have a lane closure both eastbound and westbound from 18th Street to 37th Street in East St. Louis to replace the bridge over Metro-Link in East St. Louis.   

I-255 will have a lane closure both northbound and southbound from south of Collinsville Road to north of I-64 near Caseyville for bridge deck repairs.

Exchange Avenue will be closed to all traffic from 7th Street to 9th Street in East St. Louis to replace the bridge carrying Exchange Avenue over I-55/70.  Both the exit and entrance ramps for I-55/70 will also be closed due to the bridge replacement.   

15th Street will be closed to all traffic from St. Clair Avenue to Baugh Avenue in East St. Louis to replace the bridge carrying 15th Street over I-64.  St. Clair Avenue will have a lane closed from east of 10th Street to 18th Street, and Baugh Avenue will have a lane closed from 18th Street to just west of 15th Street in East St. Louis.

Monroe County

IL 158 over IL 3 at Columbia, replacement of the bridge restricts traffic to one lane controlled by temporary traffic signals.

Randolph County

IL Rte. 4 over Plum Creek located north of Sparta.  One lane is open and controlled by temporary traffic signals in order to replace the bridge in stages.

Greene County

Eldred-Hillview Road, approximately 4 miles north of IL 108, bridge project, one lane is open and controlled by temporary traffic signals.

Eldred-Hillview Road, approximately 2 miles south of IL 108 is closed for bridge work.  Traffic has been provided a marked detour route.

IL 267 over Bear Creek located 3.5 miles north of Greenfield utilizing stage construction/temporary traffic signals.

IDOT Highway District 9

Saline County

IL 13 Lover's Lane to Old IL 13 New construction,
 one lane eastbound and westbound is open.

Franklin/Williamson Counties

 IL 37 .5 mile south of West Frankfort, one lane bridge construction,
 temporary signals in place.

Alexander County

 I-57 Mile Marker 3, bridge rehab. One lane both north and southbound is open.

Old IL 3 0.1 mile east of IL 3, bridge construction, road closed.

Pulaski County

 I-57 Mile Marker 5, bridge rehab. One lane open both north and southbound.

Old US 51 Ullin One lane bridge construction, temporary signals in place.

Williamson County

  IL 154 3.4 miles west of US 51, one lane box culvert construction,

The westbound lane of Route 149 will be closed approximately 3 miles west of Murphysboro.
