Governor Issues Disaster Declaration for Henry and Rock Island Counties

Press Release - Thursday, March 01, 2001

SPRINGFIELD -- Governor George H. Ryan today issued a disaster declaration for Henry and Rock Island counties, following severe flooding along the Rock River as a result of ice jams. Affected areas include the community of Cleveland and the townships of Colona and Hanna in Henry County and the communities of Osborn, Barstow and Hillsdale and the townships of Hampton and Zuma in Rock Island County, as well as unincorporated areas of Henry and Rock Island counties.

"This flooding jeopardized the health and safety of the citizens of these communities, making the evacuation of residents along the Rock River necessary," Ryan said. "The declaration allows for reimbursement to units of local government for extraordinary expenses associated with response and recovery efforts, and it provides for help with debris removal and clean-up once flood waters recede."

IEMA is coordinating the state response in support of local efforts. Agencies participating in the response, recovery and clean-up efforts include the Illinois Department of Transportation, Illinois Department of Corrections, Illinois Department of Natural Resources Conservation Police, Illinois State Police, Illinois Department of Public Health, Illinois Environmental Protection Agency, the American Red Cross, and the Salvation Army.

The declaration also provides assistance to affected homeowners through State Treasurer Judy Baar Topinka's low-interest loan program. Additional information is available by calling 312-814-1700.

This declaration will provide for the assessment of damages which may render an opportunity to request supplemental Federal assistance.
