Illinois EPA Awards over $212,000 in Priority Lake and Watershed Implementation Program Grants

Press Release - Tuesday, October 21, 2014

SPRINGFIELD – Illinois EPA Director Lisa Bonnett has announced $212,350 in Priority Lake and Watershed Implementation Program grant awards. The funds will be used to support lake protection, restoration, and enhancement activities at “priority” lakes in Illinois.

The Priority Lake and Watershed Implementation Program (PLWIP) is an Illinois EPA program initiative that began in July 1997. The program is funded through Partners for Conservation, a comprehensive multi-year environmental protection program that was signed into law in 1995. This program supports improvements at lakes that have been identified as priority by the Agency, where causes and sources of problems are apparent.  Project sites must be accessible with a relatively small project size that can be implemented by local entities.

“Our Illinois waterways are treasures that should be preserved and saved for all time,” Governor Pat Quinn said. “These grants help ensure that our lakes can be used for recreational and commercial purposes, while protecting the many fish, animals and bird who rely on them.”

“This program is a great example of the Illinois EPA’s commitment to protect and improve Illinois waters,” said Director Bonnett. “Through our community partnerships, we are able to see significant improvements for Illinois lakes.”
