Governor Quinn Announces $5 Million for Metro East Area Local Transportation Improvements
Funds from Illinois Jobs Now! Program will Help Area Cities and Counties Tackle Numerous Transportation Projects and Create Jobs

CAHOKIA – Governor Pat Quinn today was joined by local and area officials to announce a $5 million investment from his Illinois Jobs Now! capital construction program that will be used to repair municipal, township and county infrastructure in the Metro East area. The funds are in addition to the annual Motor Fuel Tax revenues these municipalities are scheduled to receive this year. Today’s announcement is part of Governor Quinn’s agenda to create jobs and drive Illinois’ economy forward.

“When we invest in fixing local roads, we are creating jobs and enhancing the quality of life for people throughout the area,” Governor Quinn said. “Improving these communities throughout the Metro East will make the entire state of Illinois stronger.”

Municipalities in the Metro East area can combine this investment with their annual Motor Fuel Tax allotment and deal with their unique local transportation needs. Adding these Illinois Jobs Now! funds to the Motor Fuel Tax disbursement means that local communities in this area will see an increase of about 17 percent in resources they need to move forward on immediate projects.

The $5 million announced today is part of the fourth in a series of annual investments that have come to municipalities for local transportation projects under the Illinois Jobs Now! program since 2010. The projects will be selected and managed locally, with the Illinois Department of Transportation (IDOT) providing oversight.

“This installment of capital funds for local transportation projects demonstrates our continued commitment to local governments,” IDOT Secretary Ann Schneider said. “These local projects will improve the quality of life for residents, stimulate the economy, and address immediate infrastructure needs.”

In addition to the Illinois Jobs Now! funds announced today, local governments in the Metro East area will receive approximately $28.9 million in Motor Fuel Tax funds this year.
