Governor Quinn's Administration to Announce "Governor's Awards for Excellence" on October 10

Press Release - Wednesday, October 01, 2014

CHICAGO - Governor Pat Quinn's administration will unveil the winners of the "2014 Governor's Awards for Excellence" in the fields of art, education and community health at his annual Latino Heritage Month Reception, Friday, October 10, 6:00 p.m., at the National Museum of Mexican Art, 1852 W. 19th St, Chicago.

The Governor's administration will also honor trailblazers who were featured in the "Latinos Building Illinois" exhibit in the James R. Thompson Center. These include Olgha Sierra Sandman - who helped organize migrant field workers in the 1970s - and several leading Illinois Latino architects and engineers.

The event will feature the music of Hermanos Salcedo, a highly-acclaimed group of siblings who blend traditional flamenco rhythms, modern jazz guitar and Peruvian percussion.

The "2013 Governor's Award for Excellence" went to public health pioneer Carmen Velázquez, a tireless advocate for healthcare and immigration reform.

The Governor's Latino Heritage Month Reception is free, but reservations are required. To learn more, visit http://latinoheritage.illinois.gov.
