Gov. Quinn Proclaims October as Domestic Violence Awareness Month in Illinois

SPRINGFIELD, Illinois – Governor Pat Quinn proclaimed October as “Domestic Violence Awareness Month” in the state of Illinois. The month is designed to raise awareness about the issue of domestic violence and available resources for those in need.

Throughout the month of October, several events will be held around the state in observance of “Domestic Violence Awareness Month,” including 5K walk/runs, candlelight vigils and marches. A complete listing of events can be found on the IDHS website at www.dhs.state.il.us.

“Domestic violence knows no boundaries. It exists in all neighborhoods and cities, and affects people of all ages, racial, ethnic, economic and religious backgrounds,” said Illinois Department of Human Services (IDHS) Secretary Michelle R.B. Saddler. “In Illinois alone, there are approximately 115,000-125,000 domestic crimes each year.”

IDHS supports nearly 70 multi-service domestic violence programs across the state, offering counseling and advocacy, legal assistance, children’s services, and shelter and support services at no cost to the victim.  Services are offered to help victims of domestic violence by giving them the tools they need for safety and self-sufficiency, as well as to promote prevention through education and outreach.
 
In addition, IDHS works with more than 70 Partner Abuse Intervention Programs (PAIPs) to reduce and prevent domestic violence and to assist the court system in holding abusers accountable. PAIPs work with participants in a 24 week group program to assist them in recognizing and understanding behaviors that lead to violence directed at their partners.

IDHS is dedicated to improving the identification of and response to domestic and sexual violence against people with disabilities. Through a collaborative approach between victim services and disability service providers, barriers to survivors with disabilities accessing services are addressed, outreach and education efforts are enhanced and trauma-informed support systems are strengthened.
