Governor Quinn Announces $593,000 Investment for Green Infrastructure Work in Glenwood

Press Release - Saturday, October 11, 2014

GLENWOOD - Governor Pat Quinn today announced a $593,000 investment to help control stormwater runoff, protect residents from damaging floods and improve the environment in Glenwood. Funded by the Governor's Illinois Jobs Now! capital construction program, this project will help to eliminate urban flooding and make the community cleaner and greener. Today's announcement is part of Governor Quinn's agenda to drive the economy forward and protect the environment by modernizing Illinois' water infrastructure.

"Controlling stormwater runoff by using green infrastructure improvements benefits everyone," Governor Quinn said. "This important investment will help protect the residents of Glenwood from damaging floods and make the community better for residents and businesses."

Glenwood will use the investment to retrofit an existing industrial subdivision with a regional stormwater facility. This will include a 4.3 acre wetland retention basin with native species and a contoured bottom to enhance and restore natural hydrology. The basin has been sized for a 100 year storm and for complete area development. The $593,000 Illinois Green Infrastructure Grant will be matched with $198,000 in local funding for a total project cost of $791,000.

"Glenwood is just one of many communities faced with stormwater management issues," Illinois EPA Director Lisa Bonnett said. "The regional wetland basin will enable the Village to collect and contain stormwater runoff during major wet weather events."

The Glenwood project is part of Governor Quinn's $31 billion Illinois Jobs Now! program, which will support more than 439,000 jobs over six years. Illinois Jobs Now! is the largest construction program in Illinois history, and is one of the largest construction programs in the nation.
