Governor Quinn Announces $8 Million for Construction Projects in Cook County

CHICAGO - Governor Pat Quinn today announced capital investments of more than $8 million for construction projects at Chicago State University and the North Riverside Armory. The investments will create jobs and improve the state's infrastructure. Funded by his Illinois Jobs Now! construction program, the projects are part of Governor Quinn's agenda to create jobs and drive Illinois' economy forward.

"These investments in Cook County are putting people to work, creating jobs that will help drive the local economy," Governor Quinn said. "They are also helping to repair and maintain key campus and National Guard facilities in the Chicago area."

The projects will be managed by the Illinois Capital Development Board.

Chicago State University

A total of $4.8 million will be invested to renovate the Robinson Center at Chicago State University. The announced funding represents phase one of the project, which will structurally prepare this major campus building for its future use as a major classroom, community use, lecture and laboratory building. Additional funding will be needed to renovate the interior before it can be used by the university. Phase one includes work on the building's exterior, roofing, windows, doors and mechanical systems. The successful bidders include:

  • General construction: Path Construction Co., Inc., Arlington Heights, $3,776,300.
  • Heating & air conditioning: Ideal Heating Company, Chicago, $471,111.
  • Plumbing: A & H Plumbing & Heating Co., Inc., Elk Grove Village, $187,800.
  • Ventilation: Anchor Mechanical, Inc., Chicago, $139,000.
  • Asbestos abatement: Colfax Corporation, Chicago, $121,230.
  • Electrical: Airport Electric Co., Chicago, $89,680.
  • Fire protection: Nelson Fire Protection Co., Rockford, $84,522.

North Riverside Armory

Two buildings at the North Riverside Armory will be renovated for a total of $3.2 million. The Field Maintenance Shop #9 will be renovated for $1.3 million in a project that includes tuckpointing, installing flashing, gutters and downspouts. The scope of work also provides for renovating the maintenance bays, including upgrading the climate control and electrical systems and abating asbestos-containing materials. The construction contracts awarded for the project include:

  • General: Path Construction Co., Inc., Arlington Heights, $667,700, the lowest of eight bids.
  • Plumbing: C.W. Burns Co., Inc., Downers Grove, $262,700.
  • Climate Control: R.J. Olmen Company, Glenview, $183,897, the lowest of three bids.
  • Electrical: All Tech Energy, Inc., Schaumburg, $122,974, the lowest of six bids.
  • Asbestos Abatement: Midway Contracting Group, LLC, Tinley Park, $69,000.

The Combined Support Maintenance Shop will be renovated for $1.9 million, and the work includes reconfiguring office and work bays; installing a lube system; upgrading the electrical, mechanical, plumbing, air compressor and piping systems; re-painting interior walls; replacing carpet; refinishing concrete floors; installing conduit for phone and data; and abating asbestos-containing materials. The contracts awarded include:

  • General: Path Construction Co., Inc., Arlington Heights, $996,200, the lowest of five bids
  • Climate Control: Voris Mechanical Inc., Glendale Heights, $440,935, the lowest of five bids.
  • Electrical: Public Electric Construction Co., Wheeling, $294,000.
  • Ventilation: R.J. Olmen Company, Glenview, $136,900, the lower of two bidders.
  • Hazardous Substance Testing & Abatement: Midway Contracting Group, LLC, $53,600, the lower of two bidders.

The projects are part of Governor Quinn's $31 billion Illinois Jobs Now! program, which will support more than 439,000 jobs over six years. Illinois Jobs Now! is the largest construction program in Illinois history, and is one of the largest construction programs in the nation.
