$1.3 Million in Illinois FIRST Projects for Central Illinois

SPRINGFIELD -- Governor George H. Ryan announced today that he is releasing $1,390,444 in Illinois FIRST funding for projects in Central Illinois, including $814,444 to the West Central Illinois Educational Telecommunications Corporation to convert WMEC (Macomb), WQEC (Quincy), and WSEC (Jacksonville-Springfield) broadcast facilities from an analog system to a digital system.

This conversion is required by the Federal Communication Commission and a failure to comply would result in closure of the stations and a loss of free learning/instructional programs to homes, schools, and workplaces throughout the central Illinois.

Other Illinois FIRST grants announced by Ryan:

  • $167,000 to the City of Hillsboro to construct an addition to the fire station and to purchase equipment for its new sports complex.
    This project was initiated by State Rep. Gary Hannig, D-Litchfield.

  • $100,000 to the Hardin Fire Protection District to construct a new fire station. The district is contributing $44,183.
    This project was initiated by State Sen. Vince Demuzio, D-Carlinville.

  • $100,000 the Hettick Volunteer Fire Department to purchase two fire trucks and a new water pump.
    This project was initiated by Demuzio.

  • $75,000 to the West Central Illinois Educational Telecommunications Corporation for program and acquisition rights to support quality educational programming.
    This project was initiated by Hannig.

  • $40,000 to the Village of Fieldon to construct a building for the Fieldon Rescue Squad. The village is contributing $10,000.
    This project was initiated by State Rep. Tom Ryder, R-Jerseyville.

  • $20,000 to Deer Creek Township Road and Bridge to make repairs to its equipment and to repair and level damaged roads.
    This project was initiated by State Rep. Keith P. Sommer, R-Mackinaw.

  • $20,000 to the Village of Bayview Gardens to purchase an emergency siren system for the village and to purchase radio equipment and video cameras for its police department.
    This project was initiated by Sommer.

  • $20,000 to the Menard County Economic Development Commission to purchase advertising and promotional materials.
    This project was initiated by State Sen. Larry K. Bomke, R-Springfield.

  • $20,000 to the Senior Citizens of Logan County, Inc., to purchase a 15 passenger van.
    This project was initiated by State Sen. Robert A. Madigan, R-Lincoln.

  • $14,000 to the Menard County Economic Development Commission to purchase promotionol brochures, advertising, and office supplies for business growth.
    This project was initiated by State Rep. Raymond Poe, R-Springfield.
