Distinguished Rochester Man Named Illinois Veteran of the Month

Springfield   – The Illinois Department of Veterans’ Affairs (IDVA) recognized Larry Trapani, Sr. – a U.S. Army veteran, distinguished veteran leader, and retired State of Illinois employee – as the Illinois Veteran of the Month for December 2013 at a ceremony at in Springfield on Tuesday, Dec. 17, 2013.

“Larry Trapani epitomizes the value our veterans bring to their communities and workplaces,” said Erica Borggren, Army veteran and Director, IDVA. “Starting with his service in the 1960’s and continuing through his service as a leader of several veteran organizations, Larry has made a great impact – especially in Springfield, thanks to his leadership in local fundraising and activities for veterans.”

Trapani was honored at a ceremony held at American Legion Post 32 in Springfield, with his wife of 42 years, Darlene, family and friends in attendance. IDVA Assistant Director Rodrigo Garcia presented the award to Trapani on behalf of Governor Quinn and the IDVA. Trapani retired from the Illinois Department of Transportation following a 33 year career, culminating with his serving as IDOT’s Training Program Administrator.

As a leader in state and regional veterans organizations and events, Trapani has continually served his fellow veterans through a wide variety of roles and activities, including as State Commander, the Italian American War Veterans (IAWV) Department of Illinois, and as Commander, IAWV Post 15, Springfield. In these roles, Trapani has been instrumental in spearheading programs and activities that pay homage to and greatly benefit veterans, service members and their families. He also serves local veterans as the Commander of the Inter-Veterans Council of Sangamon County, where he plays an integral role in organizing various honorary events and leading numerous advocacy and support programs.

His commitment to his local community through various volunteer and civic activities is best exemplified with his service on the Board of St. Mary’s Star of the Sea, on the Board of St. Rita’s High School in Chicago, and as the Immediate Past President of the Roman Cultural Society, where he guided the Society to a higher level of integrity and led successful fundraising efforts to support schools, award scholarships, and aid organizations that serve those in need.

Trapani’s Army experience included service in the United States and Europe as a military policeman from 1965-1967. His military awards include the Good Conduct Medal, National Defense Service Medal, Army Service Ribbon, Overseas Service Ribbon, Expert Badge - Rifle, and the Sharpshooter Badge - Pistol; as well as awards and decorations from veterans’ organizations.
