Ryan announced today that he is releasing $745,000 in Illinois FIRST funding for projects in Chicago, including $500,000 to Ounce of Prevention, a nonprofit organization that operates a state-of-the art early childhood Educare Center in Chicago's Grand Boulevard community.

CHICAGO -- Governor George H. Ryan today announced that Hilton Reservations Worldwide (HRW) plans to open a new reservations call center in Streator, Illinois, 90 miles southwest of Chicago. The new center will be one of six the company operates in the United States and will initially employ 75 people. The other centers operate in Texas, Florida, Pennsylvania, Washington and California, collectively handling HRW’s 30 million hotel reservation calls each year.

Governor’s Parole Initiative Cracks Down on Crime

Ryan today announced more than 14,781 parolees were returned to prison in FY01 as a result of the revitalized parole operation, including "Operation Windy City," which is a joint effort between the Illinois Department of Corrections and the Chicago Police Department. This marked a significant increase from the 8,150 parolees returned in FY00 and the 7,076 in FY99.

Phase two will use a fingerprint "smart card" access system to expedite the transfer of cargo from trucks to airplanes and enhance multi-modal security by developing an Internet-based cargo manifest. SPRINGFIELD -- Governor George H. Ryan today with Lt. Gov. Corinne Wood signed House Bill 180, also known as "Scott's Law." Named for slain Chicago Firefighter Lt. Scott Gillen, the bill raises the penalties for drivers who fail to yield to emergency vehicles or who cause accidents or injury to personnel at emergency scenes. Offenders could be fined up to $10,000 and their license suspended for up to two years if the violation results in the death of another person.

According to DHS' Office of Rehabilitation Services (ORS), an all-time high of 6,757 people with disabilities entered into competitive employment during fiscal year 2001. Seven Illinois Counties Receive U.S. Small Business Administration Disaster Assistance
SPRINGFIELD -- Governor George Ryan announced today that the U.S. Small Business Administration has approved his request to provide disaster assistance in the form of low-interest loans to the residents of Henry County and the contiguous counties of Bureau, Knox, Mercer, Rock Island, Stark and Whiteside. Flooding from the Rock River in the Village of Cleveland and surrounding area in Henry County caused damage to homes and businesses during the latter part of February. This flood was caused by an ice jam, inundating the area in a matter of hours.

$1.8 Million in Illinois FIRST Projects for Chicago; Northern Suburbs
SPRINGFIELD -- Governor George H. Ryan announced today that he is releasing $1.867 million in Illinois FIRST funding for projects in Chicago and its northern suburbs, including $1 million to the Newberry Library, an independent research library and educational institution, to remodel and construct an addition.

Ryan's Open Land Trust Program to Protect Nature Preserve in McHenry County
SPRINGFIELD -- Governor George H. Ryan today announced the state has acquired 66.3 acres of land in McHenry County through the Open Land Trust Program that will protect the Lake in the Hills Fen Nature Preserve.
