FY2000 BUDGET HIGHLIGHTS
$40.6 billion state budget for Fiscal Year 2000, a spending outline that fulfills and surpasses his pledge to devote 51 percent of all new general revenue funds to education and workforce training. $536 million in general funds and federal funds for education, the hiring of new teachers and workforce training. The $486 million in general funds for schools and training represents 53 percent of the growth in general funds appropriations and 58 percent of the growth in general funds revenues.

SPRINGFIELD -- Gov. George H. Ryan today announced a $370,000 grant to enhance the Fox River Trail in Elgin, Illinois. The grant will be used to replace an on-street bike route with an off-street right-of-way.

SPRINGFIELD — Gov. George H. Ryan today released funding to the city of Chicago to support a new, 24-hour-a-day Domestic Violence Helpline. Ryan directed the Illinois Department of Human Services to release an $800,000 grant.

Ryan today unveiled a fast-track road construction plan that will untangle the so-called "Hillside Strangler" within three years to dramatically cut travel time and improve traffic safety where the East-West Tollway and the Tri-State Tollway converge with the Eisenhower Expressway in western Cook County.

RYAN PROHIBITS STATE EMPLOYEES FROM GIVING TO HIS POLITICAL FUND
SPRINGFIELD -- Gov. George H. Ryan today banned state employees under his control from soliciting contributions for his political fund, Citizens for George H. Ryan, and ordered that all future contributions from state employees be returned.
