SPRINGFIELD -- In Central Illinois, $8.2 million will allow 5 businesses and organizations to train 300 new workers and retrain another 38,000. Of that number, 37,000 will receive assistance through programs offered by the Illinois Manufacturer's Association and the Illinois Chamber of Commerce.

SPRINGFIELD -- In Cook and the collar counties, $5.6 million will allow 32 businesses and organizations to train 3,200 new workers and upgrade the skills of over 14,000 current employees.

SPRINGFIELD -- Governor George H. Ryan today announced $482.6 million in state school construction grants to help school districts relieve overcrowded classrooms and replace aging educational facilities without forcing local homeowners and businesses to pay the entire cost of the improvements through higher real estate taxes.

Governor's Commission on Capital Punishment to Hold Public Meetings
CHICAGO -- The Governor's Commission on Capital Punishment has announced the first of several meetings to obtain public input into its study of the Capital Punishment system in Illinois. The Commission, appointed by Governor Ryan in March of this year, has been charged by the Governor with reviewing the capital punishment system in Illinois. The Commission would like to provide the public with the opportunity to express its views while the Commission's work is still in its investigative phase to insure that as much information as possible is available to the Commission.

Dorothea Helen Lowe, 92, First Lady's Mother Agri-Business Co-Founder And Community Advocate
CHICAGO -- Mrs. Dorothea Helen Lowe, 92, of Kankakee, mother of Illinois First Lady Lura Lynn Ryan, mother-in-law of Governor George H. Ryan, and Kankakee area community leader died on Tuesday, July 11, at the Ryan's Kankakee home. A private memorial service for Mrs. Lowe, known as "Sis" and "Nana" to her family, will be held Sunday July 16, at 1:00 p.m. at the Aroma Park Methodist Church.
