Governor Appoints Pam McDonough to Labor Relations Board
Joseph Hannon named acting DCCA director
CHICAGO -- Governor George H. Ryan today announced the appointment of Pam McDonough as the chairman of the Local Panel of the Illinois Labor Relations Board. The appointment is effective November 21, 2002, and requires confirmation by the Illinois State Senate. The term of the appointment runs to January 24, 2005.

SPRINGFIELD – Governor George H. Ryan today released $4 million in state funds to continue one of the nation’s largest environmental clean-up programs targeting polluted and neglected urban “brownfields.”

$400 million revamp of I-74 through Peoria will improve safety; assist in future economic growth
Peoria—Governor George H. Ryan today joined federal, state and local officials to officially begin the reconstruction of Interstate 74 through Peoria. The $400 million reconstruction project is the largest in Illinois history outside of Chicago and is being made possible through Illinois FIRST.

Kankakee Infrastructure to Receive Boost from Illinois FIRST
$3.5 Million Set Aside for 5TH Avenue Bridge Rehab and City Sewer System Upgrades
KANKAKEE—Governor George H. Ryan today joined Kankakee officials in announcing that $3.5 million dollars from Illinois FIRST have been set aside for two infrastructure improvements in the city. The City of Kankakee will receive $500,000 to fund the rehabilitation of the 5th Avenue Bridge and $3 million dollars for upgrading the city’s sewer system.

Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP) Now Underway
SPRINGFIELD -- Governor George H. Ryan today announced that the John W. Maitland Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP) in Illinois is now underway for the upcoming winter season. Illinois households with disabled or elderly members, and those who are disconnected from their utilities, may now apply for heating assistance at locations throughout the state.

Governor Ryan Breaks Ground on Aquatic Center, Announces Funding for New Ice Rink and Fitness Facility
KANKAKEE—Governor George H. Ryan today joined local officials from the Kankakee community to break ground on a new aquatic center and also announced funding for an ice rink and fitness center. $12.5 million in Illinois FIRST funds will be used to finance the projects, $5.9 million for the aquatic center and $6.6 million for the new ice rink.

3 CAPITAL PROJECTS TOTALING $123 MILLION POSITION UNIVERSITY FOR THE FUTURE
SPRINGFIELD -- Governor George H. Ryan today announced VentureTECH funding for three important capital projects for the University of Illinois’ Champaign-Urbana Campus that will create 1,500 construction jobs locally. The three projects total $123 million and include construction of the Post Genomics Institute, a new building for the National Center for Supercomputing Applications and an expansion of the Micro and Nanotechnology Laboratory.

Chicago—Governor George H. Ryan today joined Senate Minority Leader Emil Jones, Senator Donne Trotter, Representative Constance Howard and officials with Chicago State University to break ground on a new CSU Convocation Center. The new $31.4 million convocation center will be named for longtime Chicago State University supporters, Emil and Patricia Jones.

“Looking for Lincoln” Weekend to Precede Grand Opening of the Abraham Lincoln Presdiential Library
SPRINGFIELD - Governor George H. Ryan and First Lady Lura Lynn Ryan announced today that the November 18 grand opening of the Abraham Lincoln Presidential Library will be preceded by a “Looking for Lincoln” weekend celebration that will feature a downtown recreation of the 1850s, a special concert by the Illinois Symphony Orchestra and symposia by well-known authors and historians.

SPRINGFIELD – Governor George H. Ryan today announced the President’s Council on Physical Fitness and Sports “State Champion” schools. Saint Mary’s School in Mattoon, North Boone Elementary in Poplar Grove, and Churchill School in Homewood were honored as the champions in Illinois. Winners were selected based on their achievement in the President’s Challenge Physical Activity and Fitness Awards Programs.
