State Supports Clean Burning Boiler for Southern Illinois Power Cooperative
MARION -- Governor George H. Ryan today announced grants totaling $6.8 million to assist the Southern Illinois Power Cooperative (SIPC) with construction of a new, cleaner burning, coal-fired boiler at its Marion Power Plant. The project is expected to create hundreds of new mining and construction jobs for southern Illinois.

Governor Ryan Urges Union Members to Help Themselves, Negotiate Short Term Concessions to Balance Budget
CHICAGO -- Governor George H. Ryan today said he was prepared to return the legally-mandated cost of living increases that he and his cabinet will receive next fiscal year and freeze the salaries of the nearly 10,000 merit employees reporting to him in order to spare them from layoffs. At the same time, he urged the state’s largest employee union, AFSCME, to agree to similar contract concessions in order to spare them from more layoffs.

Former Lincoln Tomb Manager’s Collection Donated to Illinois State Historical Library
SPRINGFIELD -- Governor George H. Ryan has announced that a collection of rare newspapers, political memorabilia, photographs and Lincoln-related material, all amassed by former Lincoln Tomb manager Herbert Wells Fay, has been donated to the Illinois State Historical Library. The donation was made by Phillis Kelley, DeKalb County Historian, who acquired the material from the family of the late Paul Nehring, who purchased the Fay collection in the 1950s.

State Seeks Court Order to Force AFSCME to Follow the Terms of its Contract
SPRINGFIELD – Governor George H. Ryan announced today that lawyers for the state have asked a Kane County Circuit Court to compel the largest state employee union to fully comply with their collective bargaining agreement because the union has previously disregarded provisions that allow the state to manage its workforce.

Pleas to AFSCME Fail, State to Proceed With at Least 1,000 Layoffs
SPRINGFIELD -- Governor George H. Ryan today ordered the permanent layoff of 1,000 state employees in order to help bring the state’s budget into balance, having exhausted other alternatives to reduce spending.

Governor Ryan Addresses 183rd Fighter Wing During Departure Ceremony
183rd Being Called to Active Duty to Serve in “Operation Southern Watch”
SPRINGFIELD -- Governor George H. Ryan today addressed about 150 members of the Illinois Air National Guard’s 183rd Fighter Wing at a departure ceremony before they mobilized for active duty at various locations throughout Southwest Asia. Members of the 183rd, based at Springfield’s Capital Airport, will fly “Operation Southern Watch”, enforcing the no-fly zone over southern Iraq.

SPRINGFIELD - Governor George H. Ryan today recognized the 162 Illinois teachers who achieved National Board Certification for 2001, making this the largest class of nationally certified teachers in Illinois’ history.

Governor Ryan, Mayor Daley Ask Congress to Put Aviation Pact Into Law
SPRINGFIELD -- Governor George H. Ryan and Chicago Mayor Richard M. Daley will appear before a House Committee to testify in support of a House bill to put into federal law their recent aviation agreement to modernize O’Hare, build an additional airport near Peotone and keep Megis Field open.
