CHICAGO – October 31, 2009. Governor Pat Quinn will join with third-graders from the Donald J. Marquez Charter School at the James R. Thompson Center in Chicago and will also welcome hundreds of trick-or-treaters to the Executive Mansion in Springfield this Halloween. Governor Quinn is encouraging Illinois children to help others by participating in the United Nations Children's Fund’s (UNICEF) Trick-or-Treat program.

On National Weatherization Day, representatives from Governor Pat Quinn’s Administration joined officials with the U.S. Department of Energy, the Community and Economic Development Association of Cook County (CEDA) and Serious Materials at a multi-family unit on Chicago’s West Side to highlight services being provided through the Illinois Home Weatherization Assistance Program (IHWAP). Illinois has received approximately $242 million in additional funding through the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA) to assist with low-income home weatherization efforts over the next two years.

Auction of Federal Surplus Vehicles and Equipment Begins Today
SPRINGFIELD – The Illinois Department of Central Management Services (CMS) today announced that federal and military surplus property is available for sale via the Internet to the general public. The online auction, being conducted by the U.S. General Services Administration (GSA) and facilitated by CMS, includes items like forklifts, machine shop equipment, diesel engines, electrical and plumbing supplies and other miscellaneous equipment and commodities.

EAB Risk Management Training Offered Throughout The State
Day- long seminar will help municipalities and communities prepare for possible EAB outbreak
SPRINGFIELD, Ill. – The public will soon have one more tool to use in the fight against an invasive species that has devastated ash trees in the northern and central part of the state. The Illinois Department of Agriculture and University of Illinois Extension are hosting a series of Emerald Ash Borer (EAB) Risk Management training seminars for persons looking for more information about this beetle and what they can do to help stop its spread.

Limited supply of H1N1 vaccine
SPRINGFIELD – Dr. Damon T. Arnold, Director of the Illinois Department of Public Health, is urging Illinoisans to be patient in getting the H1N1 vaccine. Due to slower than anticipated production, there is currently a limited supply of the H1N1 vaccine nationwide. However, manufacturers continue to produce the vaccine as quickly as possible and supplies are expected to increase throughout November and December.

CHICAGO – The Illinois Department of Insurance announced today that Illinois’ largest private health insurers and HMOs have voluntarily agreed to cover administration costs associated with the H1N1 flu vaccine. The Department encouraged first-dollar coverage for the vaccine.

IDOT Secretary Announces Selection of Schools for 2009/2010 Operation Teen Safe Driving Program
Teen-Led Program Contributes to Drastic Reduction in Teen Fatalities Statewide
SPRINGFIELD - Illinois Transportation Secretary Gary Hannig today announced the high schools selected to participate in the 2009-2010 Operation Teen Safe Driving program. This statewide safety initiative is designed for teens to educate their peers about driving responsibly in an effort to decrease the number of fatalities and injuries involving teenagers in Illinois. These announcements come during the National Teen Safe Drivers Week as Illinois records a decline in teen fatalities in automobile crashes this year. From January 1through October 10, 2009, 60 teens (ages 16-19) lost their lives on Illinois roadways. During the same time period last year, there were 67 teen deaths.

Department on Aging Inducts Candidates into Senior Hall of Fame Inductees and Presents Governor’s Unique Achievement Awards

SPRINGFIELD – Illinois Department on Aging Director Charles D. Johnson presented this year’s Senior Hall of Fame and Governor’s Unique Achievement Awards today at a ceremony held at the Governor’s Mansion. The Illinois Senior Hall of Fame was created in 1994 to honor Illinoisans age 65 and older who excel in four categories: Community Service, Education, Performance and/or Graphic Arts and the Labor Force. Since then, 75 people have been inducted into the Hall of Fame which includes this year’s awardees.

Fall Community College Enrollment Sets Record
(Springfield)– The statewide Full Time Equivalency (FTE) Fall enrollments at Illinois community colleges reached an all-time record 223,353 for the current semester, an increase of 9.5% from last year, according to recently released figures from the Illinois Community College Board (ICCB). Reporting for FTE enrollments began in 1965.

State Regulator cites players at center of breast cancer victim’s public aid funeral and burial
Offers common-sense advice when planning funeral
CHICAGO – After learning of problems with a funeral held at Mount Hope Cemetery in unincorporated Cook County, the Illinois Department of Financial and Professional Regulation’s (IDFPR) has begun disciplinary proceedings against two individuals—one licensed funeral director and one unlicensed employee—involved in a breast cancer victim’s funeral this past summer. A second funeral director, Charles A. Woodcox, was charged with failing to comply with a subpoena related to his firm’s business dealings.

Liquor Control Commission Monthly Underage Compliance Report
SPRINGFIELD – In September, the Illinois Liquor Control Commission (ILCC) conducted compliance checks around the state and visited 115 businesses licensed to sell liquor. They cited 27 licensees for violations of liquor control laws. Seventy-seven percent of the licensees visited complied with Illinois liquor laws and refused to serve underage customers.

First Shipment of New H1N1 Vaccine Expected this Week – More Coming
Initial 57,000 doses of new H1N1 flu mist vaccine allotted to Illinois
SPRINGFIELD – Dr. Damon T. Arnold, Director of the Illinois Department of Public Health, announced today the first shipments of the new H1N1 flu vaccine are anticipated to arrive in Illinois today and tomorrow. The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) allotted 57,000 doses of the new H1N1 flu vaccine, in nasal spray form only, to the State of Illinois, excluding the City of Chicago. Chicago receives its own allotment of the new H1N1 vaccine.

SPRINGFIELD – Illinois Department on Aging (IDoA) Director Charles D. Johnson is calling attention to the rights of more than 100,000 residents who reside in long-term care facilities, including nursing homes and assisted-living facilities, in Illinois. The call coincides with the national observance to raise awareness about residents who live in long-term care facilities. Residents’ Rights Week, which is celebrated each year during the first full week in October, was started by the National Citizen’s Coalition for Nursing Home Reform (NCCNHR) to highlight the importance of resident focused care.

Pumpkin acreage grows into big business in Illinois
SPRINGFIELD, Ill. – The nation’s number one pumpkin producing state has devoted additional acreage to the crop. According to the 2007 Census of Agriculture, Illinois now harvests 13,679 acres of pumpkins each year on 502 farms, up from 12,296 acres on 475 farms in 2002.

Database Ensures Compliance With State’s Title Loan Rules
Illinois becomes first state in the country to electronically monitor title lending
CHICAGO – Illinois borrowers using the title to their car or truck to secure a loan will now have additional protections against predatory lenders who offer to roll over old loans, or urge customers to take a second loan to help make payments. Starting today, Illinois Consumer Installment Loan Act (CILA) licensees will be required to enter data about each loan secured by a vehicle title into a statewide database. Once the information is entered, the secure, online system will issue an authorization code if the loan meets the consumer protection standards adopted last April.

Governor Quinn proclaims October as Domestic Violence Awareness Month
CHICAGO— The Illinois Department of Labor (IDOL) is highlighting recent changes to a labor law that protects victims of domestic or sexual violence from discrimination in the workplace. Governor Pat Quinn signed legislation on August 24, 2009, amending the Victims’ Economic Security and Safety Act (VESSA) to expand protections to more Illinois workers who are affected by domestic or sexual violence. Gov. Quinn also proclaimed October as Domestic Violence Awareness month in Illinois to create greater awareness of domestic violence prevention.
