State Encourages Organizations to Apply for Health Information Exchange Planning Grants
Applications Mark the First Move to Promote Electronic Medical Records in Illinois
SPRINGFIELD – Illinois Department of Healthcare and Family Services (HFS) Director Barry S. Maram announced that starting tomorrow, April 1, grant applications will be available to organizations interested in financial assistance as their regions plan to implement a state Health Information Exchange (HIE). The HIE allows healthcare providers to share and access vital health information to help reduce medical errors and enhance patient care coordination. The grant applications represent the first step toward establishing a HIE.

Liquor Control Commission Monthly Discipline Report
SPRINGFIELD – In March 2009, the Illinois Liquor Control Commission (ILCC) conducted compliance checks in five communities and visited 254 businesses licensed to sell liquor. They cited 60 licensees for allegedly selling liquor to underage customers. Seventy-six percent of all licensees visited complied with Illinois liquor laws and refused to serve underage customers.

New Anhydrous Ammonia Safety Video Available
SPRINGFIELD, Ill. – Each spring and fall, Illinois farmers apply anhydrous ammonia to provide essential nitrogen to their corn and wheat crops. Fertilizer dealers and farmers transport anhydrous ammonia to the field in white nurse tanks and connect the tanks to tool bars behind a tractor. The product then is injected into the ground where it bonds to soil to provide nitrogen at the root zone of the planted crop.

State Public Health Director Urges Screenings for the Second Leading Cause of All Cancer-Related Deaths in Illinois
Regular screenings could prevent up to 60 percent of deaths due to colorectal cancer
SPRINGFIELD – Dr. Damon T. Arnold, state public health director, is urging all men and women over the age of 50 to get screened and for colorectal cancer, or tell their loved ones to, during National Colorectal Cancer Awareness Month.

Illinois Economy Continues to Contract Amid Ongoing National Employment Deterioration
CHICAGO – Illinois payroll employment declined by -37,200 jobs in February, the second largest over-the-month decrease on record (back to 1990), according to data released today by the Illinois Department of Employment Security (IDES). Over the year, Illinois employers have reduced payrolls by -206,300 jobs. The seasonally adjusted Illinois unemployment rate was 8.6 percent in February, up +0.8 points from the revised January rate of 7.8 percent. The over-the month increase was the largest on record (back to 1976) and the rate hit its highest level since December 1991. The number of unemployed persons in the state (570,100) continued its climb, reaching its highest level since November 1983.

The IPFM is a market held during evening hours on the Illinois State Fairgrounds. It offers consumers locally grown fresh produce as well as other Illinois agribusiness products.

Garden will be open to the public and located on Illinois State Fairgrounds
SPRINGFIELD, Ill. – If you are looking for a spot to try out your green thumb, the Illinois Department of Agriculture (IDOA) has just the place. IDOA is announcing the inaugural year of the Illinois State Fairgrounds Community Garden. The garden was created to give residents a space to grow fresh produce, herbs, or other flowers and plants, in a friendly and safe environment.
