Illinois State Fair Grandstand To Feature Professional Wrestling
SPRINGFIELD, Ill. – The Intergalactic Wrestling Federation will fill the Grandstand with punches, dropkicks and suplexes Sunday, Aug. 23 at 5 p.m. The event is free of charge to fairgoers and will feature current and former professional wrestling superstars.

Governor Quinn Signs Mortgage Fraud Protection Bill
Consumer Law Cracks Down on Predatory Lenders
CHICAGO – July 31, 2009. Governor Pat Quinn signed a mortgage fraud protection bill that provides greater consumer safeguards to those seeking home loans. The new law provides increased oversight of residential mortgage companies and mortgage loan originators by the Illinois Department of Financial and Professional Regulation (IDFPR).

Liquor Control Commission Monthly Underage Compliance Report
SPRINGFIELD – In July 2009, the Illinois Liquor Control Commission (ILCC) conducted compliance checks around the state and visited 41 businesses licensed to sell liquor. They cited 12 licensees for violations of liquor control laws. Seventy-one percent of the licensees visited complied with Illinois liquor laws and refused to serve underage customers.

SPRINGFIELD, Ill.—Parents and grandparents of infants less than 12 months of age have one last chance to enroll in the state’s College Illinois! ® 529 prepaid tuition program before prices increase. That’s because College Illinois! plans will still be offered at 2008-’09 prices until August 1, which is less than the prices for contracts set to go into effect when enrollment re-opens November 1.

Governor Quinn Signs Bill to Expand Charter Schools in Illinois
New Law Allows for Double the Number of Charter Schools in Illinois
CHICAGO – July 30, 2009. Governor Pat Quinn today signed a law that doubles the number of charter schools allowed in Illinois from 60 schools to 120 schools. The law increases the number of single-campus charter schools allowed in Chicago from 30 to 70 and in the rest of the state from 30 to 45 schools, and adds five additional charter schools in Chicago devoted exclusively for high school dropouts.

Governor Quinn Announces $3.6 million in Federal Recovery Funds to Improve School Cafeterias
254 Schools to Improve Safety and Nutrition in Schools Serving Low Income Students
CHICAGO – July 29, 2009. Governor Pat Quinn today announced the Illinois State Board of Education (ISBE) will distribute nearly $4 million in federal recovery funding to improve school cafeterias in some of Illinois’ neediest schools. The competitive grants were awarded to 84 districts to purchase equipment for 254 schools that will improve the quality of meals, increase energy efficiency of cafeteria operations and boost participation in schools meals programs.

CHICAGO – July 27, 2009. Governor Pat Quinn was joined by Senator Dick Durbin and Chicago Mayor Richard M. Daley to host Midwest Governors and rail executives at the Midwest High Speed Rail Summit. The Governors today announced an agreement between the eight states to work cooperatively to achieve funding from the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA) to develop the Midwest corridor.

SPRINGFIELD, Ill. – Federal grant funds are available to help Illinois specialty crop growers. The Illinois Department of Agriculture today announced it will receive up to $435,000 from the U.S. Department of Agriculture for programs next year that improve the competitiveness of their industry.

CHICAGO – July 26, 2009. Governor Pat Quinn today signed into law a bill compensating Illinois Veterans for their service during the Global War on Terrorism. Any Illinois Veteran who served on active duty on or after Sept. 11, 2001 is eligible to receive $100.

Illinois Department of Transportation announces safety belt use reaches a new record of 91.7 percent
Fatal crashes are down sharply in Illinois in 2009, as state continues to make gains in saving lives
SPRINGFIELD – Illinois Department of Transportation (IDOT) Secretary Gary Hannig today announced that Illinois has continued to make gains in roadway safety in 2009, as the number of motorists and front seat passengers who buckle up in the state edged upwards to a record 91.7 percent. The Illinois Department of Transportation’s Division of Traffic Safety reports the overall number of fatalities on Illinois roads is down by 10.3 percent on a provisional basis for the first six months of 2009; from 484 in 2008, to 434 in 2009.

Department of Healthcare and Family Services collects over $1 billion in child support during fiscal year 2009
FY2009 fifth year of record collections for Illinois families
CHICAGO – Department of Healthcare and Family Services (HFS) Director Barry S. Maram today announced that for the fifth consecutive year, the department has collected a record amount of child support for Illinois children. The $1.38 billion collected for custodial parents during fiscal year 2009 is a slight increase over the amount collected during fiscal year 2008. This small increase reflects the nation’s economic recession, which has brought new challenges to collecting money from noncustodial parents who may be experiencing unemployment or decreased wages.

Donating Miles Allows Wounded Heroes to Reunite with their Families
CHICAGO – July 23, 2009. In his first press conference since visiting Illinois troops in Iraq and Afghanistan, Governor Pat Quinn today joined wounded Illinois veteran Marine Corporal Chad Watson to urge caring citizens to help servicemembers by donating their unused frequent flyer miles to Operation Hero Miles. Operation Hero Miles is a program that helps military families visit service members who were injured in Iraq or Afghanistan and are recovering in military hospitals around the world.

Home Start advances $8,000 federal tax credit to help with down payment
CHICAGO – First-time homebuyers in Illinois now have an opportunity to take advantage of current low-interest rates and decreasing home prices under an innovative new program offered by the Illinois Housing Development Authority (IHDA). The Illinois Home Start Loan Program allows hundreds of residents to achieve the dream of homeownership through a new 30-year fixed rate loan, and an advance loan on the federal tax credit created by the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009.

Illinois Department of Veterans’ Affairs hosts ceremony honoring local World War II Veterans
Six Illinois Veterans, five other Midwest Veterans awarded with Legion of Honor Medal from French Authorities
CHICAGO – The Illinois Department of Veterans’ Affairs hosted a Legion of Honor Medal ceremony for 11 World War II Veterans at the James R. Thompson Center in Chicago today. The French authorities presented the Legion of Honor Medal to six Illinois Veterans and five other Midwestern Veterans who helped liberate France during World War II. The Legion of Honor Medal is the highest honor that France can bestow upon those who have accomplished remarkable deeds for France.

John D. Rogner Named Assistant Director of Illinois Department of Natural Resources
SPRINGFIELD, IL – Governor Pat Quinn has named John D. Rogner as the assistant director of the Illinois Department of Natural Resources (IDNR). Rogner joins the IDNR from the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (USFWS), where he has served since 1998 as supervisor of the Chicago Field Office.

$10.7 Million Collected from Voluntary Disclosure Program
SPRINGFIELD – The Department of Revenue has collected more than $4 million from mailings sent to 591 Illinois businesses as part of its ongoing effort to educate taxpayers and enforce existing tax laws. Another 119 businesses, who did not receive the mailing, came forward and paid $6.7 million in Use Tax owed under Illinois’ existing Voluntary Disclosure program.

Gov. Quinn Announces Jackson, Williamson Counties Approved for SBA Assistance
Homeowners, businesses affected by May 8 storm eligible to apply for low-interest loans
SPRINGFIELD – Governor Pat Quinn today announced that the state’s request for a U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA) disaster declaration has been granted for the following primary counties – Jackson and Williamson – and the contiguous counties of Franklin, Johnson, Perry, Pope, Randolph, Saline and Union. On July 14, Gov. Quinn asked the SBA to make low-interest loans available to homeowners, renters and businesses in those two counties that suffered heavy damage from the May 8 severe storm.

Governor Quinn Vetoes Budget Bill; Calls for $1 Billion in Cuts
Says Legislators, Other Constitutionals Must Share Sacrifice
CHICAGO – July 7, 2009. Governor Pat Quinn today vetoed House Bill 2145 saying the General Assembly’s bill fails to make any significant cuts in state operations. Instead, the Governor proposed passing a responsible “Tough Choices” budget, which calls for cutting an additional $1 billion in state costs.

CHICAGO – July 6, 2009. Governor Pat Quinn continued to fulfill his pledge to reform top state pension boards by naming four trustees to the State University Retirement System board and six trustees to the State Employees Retirement System board. Recently, the Governor signed legislation to reform the boards by implementing needed structural changes and ensuring they are more open and accountable to the people.
